Kate Middleton For the Win; Best Wedding Hat

April 29, 2011 by WendyB

Most days, I can’t haul my ass out of bed before the crack of noon, but I’m up to watch the royal wedding. Kate Middleton for the win, as this highlarious Tumblr puts it.

I’ve been irked at some fashion police criticism of Kate’s style for not being edgier. My Wear What You Want policy does call for a sense of appropriateness. As I wrote in 2009:

“Obviously, ‘Wear What You Want’ doesn’t apply to every situation. You shouldn’t wear a boob belt dress to a funeral. Nor should you wear a skin-tight, backless white halter dress to your first day of work as an intern at CNN.”

It’s perfectly appropriate for a princess-to-be to be well-groomed and wholesome-looking, and not a runway-obsessed fashionista. I keep wondering if the complainers are the same folks who whine that Lady Gaga doesn’t dress “normally.” People are never satisfied!

UPDATED TO ADD: The winning hat definitely belonged to Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, the wife of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Sleeves! Thank god. So often I see modern dresses with sleeves and they’re done so well… I don’t understand why everyone is still on the strapless bandwagon!

I with Ashe Mischief about the strapless bandwagon. It has got to go.

Not that I saw the wedding. Hope it was purty.

that is one pretty fierce hat flower thing growing out of her head!

I like that she’s not over the top, she doesn’t have to be. I wonder how much of it is herself, does she probably wear what she’s told instead?

Hi there-loved the whole day, has been so uplifting and a total joy to watch! Catherines dress was perfect for her and I agree about the hat on Miriam, I saw it earlier and thought it was the best I’d seen too!! xxx

Well said re. the fashion criticisms of Kate Middleton. She seems to have very classic tastes, and if that’s what she prefers and she looks and feels good in what she wears, who are the fashion police to judge?

Oh, and I’m so checking out that Tumblr. 😀

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez gets my vote for best frock too – apart from Kate and her sister.

I planned to get up at 5:30, but must have forgotten to push my alarm button after setting the time. So I flew downstairs at 6:15 to catch as much as I could live. Am filling in gaps now!

I agree with the “Wear What You Want” but have to say…Princess Beatrice needed to not be wearing such an attention getting, crazy, hat when she was seated behind the Queen. That was a bit…”not approprate for the occasion” in my books.

I LOVED Pippa’s bridesmaid dress and could see wearing that as a wedding dress since I like simple looking gowns with a twist (in this case the plunging front with the drape). Kate’s dress was classically gorgeous and modern at the same time.

Kate doesn’t strike me as a “crazy, fashionista” type girl but more of a “classic” dresser who likes simplicity with a slight twist. There is nothing wrong with that and I am glad she wasn’t so horrible over the top as Diana was with her too long train and puffy sleeves. It’s nice to see Kate’s sense of style is not totally, well Princess Beatrice. 🙂

Poor Beatrice and Eugenie…not the most flattering moment for them.

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez stole the show! Best outfit by miles, gorgeous woman, fierce style. xxx

I totally understand why Kate went for the classic look. One, because that’s her style. Two, she’s marrying into a terribly traditional family. Three, she has to wear something that will stand the test of time.

I’m just disappointed I guess because her gown came from Alexander McQueen. And he’s not exactly known for classic, timeless, simple dresses. It’s like going to a U2 concert and they sang a Britney Spears song.

But I thought Kate looked amazing. Gorgeous. Beautiful. Perfect. Her tiny waist is insane!

I meant Beethoven! I don’t think Britney will ever qualify for timeless and clasic =P

LOL…. People should just stop whining uh…. but then it is so easy to criticize uh.

  24. For Those About To Shop says

    May 1, 2011 at 4:32 pm

Those silly critics seem not to have seen anything else Kate has worn over the last eight years. She was NEVER fashion-forward or avant-garde. She has always been classic, elegant and ladylike. Why would she be any different on her wedding day?

    • WendyB says

      May 1, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Well, peeps have criticized her for the previous looks too but if that’s what she likes, why can’t she wear it? Sheesh. Not everyone has to be Daphne Guinness, right?

  25. Kristin says

That floral hat killed me too! If only I could wear a head full of flowers with such aplomb!

  26. Elizabeth says

I think K.M. does fine, and I’d probably feel a bit of pressure to keep things restrained if I were a princess, too.
