Weight-Loss Tip

May 26, 2009 by WendyB

When the moon is directly overhead you weigh slightly less.

I got this bit of trivia from the underside of my Diet Snapple lid. Snapple always puts what it calls a “Real Fact” on the flip side of the lid. That’s where I read that a duck’s quack doesn’t echo. I’m skeptical about that. I keep meaning to get a duck and stand on the edge of the Grand Canyon to put the Real Fact to the test. I’ll yell, “Hello!” and we’ll hear, “Hello hello hello.” Then, of course, I’ll yell, “Echo!” and we’ll hear, “Echo echo echo!” And then I’ll squeeze the duck, and it will say, “Quack!” And we better hear “……………………” or I’m going to have to speak very sternly to the Snapple people. Very sternly, indeed.

Test subject

You can read more Snapple Real Facts here. We can discuss them tonight while we all stand under the moon. See you there.

Speaking of trivia-related group activities, I’m sad to say that we missed our chance to jointly celebrate National Escargot Day, which was on May 24. It’s probably for the best. Snails are on my bad side after one rolled around on my new skirt recently. By next May 24, I’ll probably have gotten over that, so put the holiday on your 2010 calendar.

UPDATED TO ADD: I can’t believe I published this without reminding you of Peter Cook’s “Interesting Facts” skit, which I previously posted here. If you haven’t already seen it, drop everything and watch it now. It’s worth it just to see John Cleese laugh.

Your proposed duck-echo test seems sound. Since I assume “slightly less” means “fractions of an ounce,” I wonder how you’d go about testing the moon-weight fact, Dr. WendyB?

I love the Snapple facts. I wonder who first discovered that a duck’s quack doesn’t echo. Do you think someone just randomly noticed it or that people conducted a bunch of animal sound echo experiments?

You really must test the duck fact…inquiring minds need to know the truth!

Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to the moon fiesta, since I weigh less I will be trying on clothes. For once I will look good in front of those dressing room mirrors..yeah!

Copper, I most certainly did not know that!

Duck quacks do echo!! There was an article in New Scientist and they did it on Mythbusters 🙂 Actually here’s an answer to it (http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/acoustics_info/duck/?content=index). It’s a shame really. On a factual note, male black ducks’ feet turn bright red during mating season. I suppose they don’t get the want for a change of shoes so easily.

That awful snail. How could it violate your skirt like that? The nerve.

I’m driving right out to the Grand Canyon, and take out my duck flashlight (since I don’t have a real duck), and press the “quack” button, to see if it echoes.

    I really can’t buy that a duck’s quack doesn’t echo.

I’m also not sure about this moon thing, but you bet I’m going to try it.

He he love this! I’ve always had a soft spot for Snapple lids even though I was never fond of the beverage.

But really, how much less could you weigh anyway, skinny minnie 🙂

Well, Dapper Kid, this puts me in a very awkward position. I already bought plane tickets and booked a hotel room for me and that duck. We’re even planning a mule ride down the canyon! What am I going to tell him?

  24. WendyB says

    May 26, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Thumbelina, tell me you didn’t find that out from a Snapple!

    Not that I’m a duck… :\

Lots of Snapple facts are untrue! As appalling as it is, that in fact is true.

Quacks do echo. Chewing gum will not prevent you from crying while chopping an onion… sad sad sad.

I shouldn’t have attempted to read those Snapple facts at work. My head is going to explode.
And good luck getting a duck to the Grand Canyon. Ha. 😉

  46. StyleSpy says

    May 27, 2009 at 6:45 pm

Wouldn’t the Holland Tunnel be easier than the Grand Canyon? I mean, there are ducks right there in Central Park — maybe just chase one under one of the park underpasses and squeeze it there…

  47. fashion herald says

    May 28, 2009 at 3:04 pm

ignore Dapper Kid, because I really want to be at the Grand Canyon with a video camera when you and your duck visit.

  48. Sheila says

    May 28, 2009 at 6:56 pm

That duck thing sounds like BS, but I’d love to be there when you test this.

I’d like to test the quack thing too.. Only, I’m afraid people will see me and think I’m a quack myself!

By the way, the Peter Cook link you put is misspelled, therefore it doesnt take you to the link. Just thought you’d like to know 😉
