Shoe Hopes Dashed

November 20, 2008 by WendyB

I was excited to get the much-criticized YSL Trooper Pumps when I saw they were on sale.

But then I saw they were in whole sizes only. WTF? I’m usually a 36.5, so a 36 or a 37 just won’t do. This was a problem for me when I finally found my dream Doc Martens with heels. The 36 was too small and the 37 was too big.

Clearly the No. 1 way to get me to fall in love with a pair of shoes is for other people to call them ugly, because both these shoes have been badmouthed all over the blogosphere. I feel that just gives them more personality. Speaking of shoes with personality and size issues, here’s the long overdue update on my fish feet obsession. I finally got those shoes on eBay in a size 6.5, which is the size of my other two pairs of Louboutins. Bizarrely, they felt too tight anyway, so I figured I’d get them stretched. As with any easy task, I’ve put off doing that for about six months. That’s not bad, really. I’ve put off other things for six years. Anyway, I promise I will try to get that stretching business done next month, so that I can finally experience fish-feet joy.

Hi there-the fish shoes are soo fabulous! Can’t wait to see them in action! I really like the Doc martins too, I wonder if they’re in the UK yet?

Love the fish shoes. Not mad on these ones but I just had to say how immensely jealous I am of your teeny tiny feet.

I’m a UK 6.5, which I guess is around a 39.5 or 40. Sure it’s fine NOW, but vintage shoes? I guard them with my life when I find them in my size. Even if I never wear them.

I made fun of those YSLs, but I never said I didn’t like ’em! I do!

Too bad about the sizing. I have that half-size problem with my 9.5 Nimitz-class feet.

I really, really want to see fish feet! I loved the fish feet when you first posted them and my love has not been diminished! I actually really like the YSL shoe.

What a bummer on the whole sizes only!

Love the red Docs. They’re weird but in a good way.

Gosh those fish shoes are actually completely amazing.

And does shoe stretching really work..?

I love the second pair of shoes, it’s more my style than the pumps… but then again, I can barely wear high heels (that’s the real issue with those shoes)

I love eBay, too, and have gotten some pretty stuff. But when the size isn’t right, especially with shoes, I feel sooooo bad!

And congratulations on your show, sweetie! So proud of ya!

Yes, I hate how some shoes (ahem, Aldo) use only whole sizes! I am also between a 36 and 37, and it is just a pain when shoes don’t fit perfectly.

I have a love for shoes consider weird or ugly as ell. If people think they are bizarre or ugly I like them. The shoes I find ugly are the ones everyone loves usually. Crocs for one. Detest those things.

I love both pairs you have here and would buy the pumps myself.

The first pair of shoes are so unique! And I actually love the heeled docs – they would give me a rock edge without the leg-stumping flat sole!

I’ve never seen the red Dr. Martens. They are funky. Can’t you get them stretched as well? btw, I can’t wait to see you wearing your fish number.

    their sizing is whack

don’t even get me started on shoe sizes. 7s are usually to tight and 7.5s are way too big. i usually just buy a 7 and hopefully it stretches.

i’m planning on becoming rich enough to have custom 7.25s
    😉

I LOVE the Doc Marten heels, but I’m afraid that on my 9.5 feet they will look, ahem…
    less than lovely.

    But, maybe…?

you know, i actually don’t think the 1st pair are ugly at all. you are right about them having more personality. too bad they only come in half sizes 🙁 i’m sure you’ll find some you love.

    November 21, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I think it’s the other way round – as with a lot of other things, the fact that they have a personality or character makes people badmouth them…until they get adopted by some celebrity and deemed ‘cool’…everyone retracts their statements and rush out to buy them.

I see real beauty in ugly things all the time and it’s not me having a oh-i’m-being-so-ironic moment. Perceived runt-of-the-litter type things need love too and I’m glad you’re there with me. But those shoes are not ugly, they are just different, out of people’s comfort zones. However, now that you’ve endorsed them…

Sorry about the trooper pumps. 🙁 Anything higher than 2.5 inches is difficult enough–they need to make it fit for us!!

red docs are my life, I have a post about them on my blog 🙂 I’ve always been a purist about them, but the ones with the heels are actually pretty far out…

I can’t say I like any one of them.. But if I HAD to choose, I’d say the YSL ones because of the high heels..

How did I remember the first pair you posted, but not the Docs?!

Thanks for the Brown’s tip.. may be worthwhile, since no one else in the UK seems to have them in the size/color I want…
