What Wendy Wore: Zoom Birthday Party

December 24, 2021 by WendyB

My birthday was yesterday, and I wound up celebrating on Zoom, thanks to Omicron. I did make an effort to dress festively, but only from the waist up. It made it easy to take an outfit photo. I didn’t even have to get off the couch.

What Wendy Wore
Glasses: 2011 Prada frames (purchased in 2021)
Top: MaxMara (pre-2005 purchase)
Lipstick: Combination of MAC shades too old to admit to

If those new-to-me pink-and-orange Prada glasses from 2011 look familiar, it’s because I’ve famously worn the dress they go with many times over the past 10 years.

My jaw dropped when I stumbled across the matching sunglasses on Poshmark. All I could think about was how hilarious it would be to wear them with the dress. I had to have them!

This is how the glasses originally looked.

However, I am too practical to buy these just to wear them on the infrequent occasions where I would need sunglasses while wearing one particular dress — not when I need ever-stronger prescription glasses for everyday reading anyway. I brought the shades to Visionary Optics and had the lenses replaced with prescription transition lenses. Voilà! Now I can wear these as much as I want, and I still get the sunglass-effect.

I was inspired to think pink for my birthday Zoom my friend Abigail. She was perusing Cup of Jo’s “Gift Guide #8: Your Adoring Wife Who Loves Everything About You (Except, Maybe, Just Sometimes, Loud Sneezes)” and discovered the suggestion of “a monthly donation in her name to Planned Parenthood, Sister Song or Indigenous Women Rising” was illustrated by this:

Abigail sent me a screen shot, and I was like, “Dafuq? How does Cup of Jo have a photo of me from a May 2018 Planned Parenthood protest?” So, I did a reverse image search and found out that Planned Parenthood has used this image quite a number of times. I especially enjoyed seeing myself selling merch in their Action Boutique. Hey, at least it’s for a good cause.

The sign is covering me, but I’m sure I was wearing the pink Planned Parenthood t-shirt I got at the 2017 Women’s March. I wore that to several protests in 2018. Inspired, I originally planned to put that shirt on for the Zoom call, but once I put on the glasses, I decided to let them take the starring role. They’ll have enough competition from the dress next summer!

Speaking of good causes for reproductive rights, my SpaceNook birthday fundraiser is for the National Network of Abortion Funds. If you want to chip in to help women who need abortions, click here.
