RM by Roland Mouret

September 3, 2009 by WendyB

I can’t take my eyes off the Aspre sheath dress from RM by Roland Mouret.

Available at Bergdorf Goodman

Available at Bergdorf Goodman

I have two Roland Mouret pieces. The first is a skirt from his original namesake line. He quit designing that line in 2005 due to differences with the company owners, who then retained the rights to his name. That’s the big drawback to having investors. Jil Sander knows all about that. Anyway, when I first saw this skirt with the deconstructed flounce at the bottom, I thought, “That’s very weird and kind of ugly … I love it!”

Wearing my Mouret skirt at GeorgeB's birthday dinner.

Wearing my Mouret skirt at GeorgeB's birthday dinner.

The last time I wore it, a woman I know said, “That’s an interesting skirt.” I said, “Thank you” before realizing that wasn’t necessarily a compliment. Humph. Well, not everyone has great taste like me.

This summer I got a dress from the newer RM by Roland Mouret line. I call this my “sex-ay military nurse dress.” I don’t have a full length picture, but the dress is longer than knee-length, quite tight and has the kind of neckline that caused a friend’s teenage boys to describe me as “the one with the boobs and lipstick.”

You get the idea.

You get the idea.

The construction of both pieces is amazing — his designs really hold you in. Thanks to that, I don’t feel the need to wear a Spank underneath.

Meanwhile, I’ve been dying to know how involved Mouret is in Victoria Beckham’s clothing line. According to Beckham’s reps, Mouret merely introduced her to a few people and then happily congratulated her on her success “designing” clothes that look a hell of a lot like his. If that’s true, he’s stupidly generous. I hope that he’s actually getting tons of money to do her designs on the down-low. That would be a clever way to finance his own line, and I definitely want to see him stay in business. I love his style, but I’m only going to be buying it from Mouret himself, not Posh Spice.

that red dress is to.die.for. love! the skirt is a little too eccentric for my minimalist tastes i’m afraid (looks great on you though) but i could definately steal that military-nurse dress from you! 😉

Love your skirt – and yes that dreadful remark ‘that’s interesting’. One is always compelled to ask in what way.

The sheath dress is bloody amazing! Every thing about VB’s ‘designs’ say Roland and I hope he’s getting a good wage too.

Very interesting how similar his dresses are to VB’s. You look amazing in your dress. I bet your husband wrote you a sweet note on a napkin when he saw you in that number.

Well said!!! I couldn’t agree more – the very idea of Victoria Beckham as a ‘designer’ has me foaming at the mouth.

In answer to your question, ‘RM by Roland Mouret’ was launched in 2007 with the help of Simon Fuller (aka ‘Spice Girls’ impresario) via his ’19 Entertainment’ company. According to press reports at the time (if you can believe the fashion press about anything), Roland Mouret and Simon Fuller are equal partners in the venture. ’19 Entertainment’ also funds Victoria Beckham’s dress and denim lines hence Mouret’s involvement.

My understanding is that Beckham’s dress line is produced by the same factory as Mouret’s and they have the same pattern cutter which may account for the fact that Beckham’s dresses have a deja vu quality to them.

Um, he needs to give you a cut because you wear his clothes well! He certainly knows how to dress a woman. His pieces are always sexy-classy.

And that woman who complimented you, she’s a doorknob. You look fabulous and Kiera Knightley wore the dress version to that skirt, and she rocked it too.

Ugh! I saw a documentary about JLo “designing” her stupid Sweetface line. They would make everything, then bring it to her and she would point and say “can you change this seam?”
Fuck, you are NOT Karl Lagerfeld! If they knew what went into designing and producing a garment, they would not call themselves designers.

Thank You is always, ALWAYS, the best response to a backhanded/ambiguous compliment. Especially if you know that they don’t mean it as a compliment.

Also? the boobs and the lipstick? consider them coveted.
