Sprouse Is Back, Back Again

December 1, 2008 by WendyB

I perked up yesterday when I read that Louis Vuitton is doing another round of Stephen Sprouse designs (click here and here). I always had a thing for the late Sprouse. He might have been one of the first designers I was ever aware of, thanks to the Sprouse dress worn by Debbie Harry in Blondie’s 1979 Heart of Glass video.

For a long time, I hung on to an original Sprouse white blazer that I got in the ’80s, but got horribly discolored and the boxy cut was not at all flattering, so I had to let it go. Since then, I got a couple of pieces of the 2001 Sprouse-Vuitton collaboration, as well as a few pieces of vintage clothing. I’m always on the lookout for more, but a lot of it wasn’t really well made and the oversized, boxy ’80s cuts never really looked great on me.

Here’s my mini Sprouse collection.

I wore my Day-Glo orange Sprouse jacket to see Madonna this year.
My “Hardcore” Sprouse skirt, photographed in January 2007.
I wear this skirt all the time, but don’t seem to have a picture of it in action.

From the new collection, I’d love to have this little green dress.

The one downside to the new Sprouse collection is that it is an excuse for Vuitton designer Marc Jacobs to make my eyes bleed by getting naked again. It certainly doesn’t take much to get him naked, does it? I should send the beyotch who once told me that I shouldn’t wear the Hardcore skirt to talk to Marc about his inappropriate nudity issue. If she was offended by my legs, I can’t imagine she’ll approve of this:

I wish Jacobs were less talented so I could completely dismiss him, because he does seem a ridiculous prima donna of a man; but I’m afraid he’s going to be with us for some time to come. But, yeah, buddy — put some clothes on. (I went through a big weight loss this year, too, but you don’t see me parading around naked all over the place, do you?)

Who could be offended by your legs! They’re hot! It sounds like you were right to let the boxy blazer go. You have some other very cool pieces in your collection to make up for it, especially that Hardcore skirt. And I really love the mutations of band logos on the other one you picture below it.

Wendy, would you take over LV and fire Marc? I don’t want to have to see him naked again unless it means I get a free LV bag.

LBR, look at that photo again. If he hands that bag to you, we’re all going to have to see the full monty!

I have to admit he’s rather hot.
Better him naked than, say, Micheal Kors.. although that could be interesting. haha

Miss Wendy, what a divine collection of pieces! The orange jacket is outstanding, as is the skirt! Unfortunately, we can't bear the penchant for getting in touch with his inner exhibitionist….eww!

Grins & giggles for the rest of your week!

Oy vey–he is so effing vain. I liked his pudgy, nerdy self better.

But I do adore Sprouse! I had, way back in the 1980s some sort of Sprouse/Haring hybrid red halter jumpsuit with black writing and squiggles. Trust me, it was fab (and from Paris, which makes it beyond reproach . . .).

Go get the green dress for your loyal readers’ vicarious pleasure.
