I, Max.

April 14, 2008 by WendyB

My gorgeous sister Terri Berry and her handsome husband Tim Berry are the proud parents of a rescued Pekingese named Max. When they first got him, I congratulated her on his unique name. Then I suggested she liven it up by giving him a middle initial and last name too. “Max E. Pad” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Okay, she didn’t think so either.

Max

Anyway, the maxi dress has made a big comeback. I’ve enjoyed maxis for a while because quite a few of my Ossie Clark dresses are long. Even if you can’t splurge on an Ossie, there are lots of wonderful vintage maxis available online. Why get a seen-everywhere Victoria’s Secret or H&M maxi when you can have a one-of-a-kind piece? Not that the H&M dress doesn’t look fabulous on everyone whose gotten it — because it does — but I’m starting to feel like I’m going to go to a party this summer and see 20 lady peeps wearing identical H&M dresses.

Here are some vintage ideas.

Op Art on eBay

Bold print on eBay

Split personality dress on eBay

Parrots and grapes from Posh Vintage

Bid on Bohemian

Floral for sale

Bold is better

Ethnic from Etsy

Pretty Pucci

Auction over, alas.

I say if you’re going to wear a long dress, throw caution to the wind and go for the giant print.

Not a dress for shrinking violets.

I vividly remember the days when I wore hot pants, mini skirts, and maxi skirts, all at any given time on any given day–except to work, well, I did wear a chocolate brown maxi skirt to work with a high-necked white blouse made of fabric with sort of ribbons and lace going from across, alternating with each other. Sorry, I don’t know the proper terms. I do remember how we women finally convinced our male departmental manager to give us permission to wear pant suits to work. His rule–the two pieces had to be an outfit, a matching outfit, because he didn’t want to see any women wearing their pajamas to work!

Hi Wendy-my favourite is the Leonard, followed closely by the Pucci. Leonard is definitely getting popular-bidding is always a furious affair!

According to Grazia, you need to be winsome to pull off maxi dresses with no cleavage-showing either…. sounds like too much of a fuss for a dress….

I love maxi dresses; they remind me of my childhood when I’d wear one with platform shoes.

Maxi dresses are so chic, and such a blessing. Kind of like wearing a nightgown. My mother did the maxi dress to maxi effect. I like you in yours, you look modern and saucy.

Cute little Max the dog looks chic, and will likely be a blessing for your lovely sister and her husband. Congrats to them.

I almost misused the term as “shrieking violet” the other day, which is a much more amusing term.

Love em especially the green and black above yours, and yours too of course. Wish I was taller to rock it.

“Wendy B” and the phrase “shrinking violet” don’t even belong in the same universe together.

I have three, but I’m so afraid to wear them! They’re real particular, and I dont go to particular places anymore.

Miss J LOVES the maxi dress and is delighted by its return. She noted that in one Neiman Marcus catalogue they were being called “Patio Dresses”. So evocative of vintage cocktail parties, dont’ you think? Made Miss J immediately want to splurge one one then have a party to show it off.

You look gorgeouse in your maxi dress.
Love all the vintage ones you pictured.

Wow you look great in that dress. I so agree with you about working the maxi trend with vintage pieces. Who wants to look at some other girl wearing the same generic thing? K

Eli, you gave me a laugh. Are your dresses particular as in they say to you “No, that’s not our kind of place.” I don’t think you should let the dresses boss you around like that.
Lynn, how tall are you? I’m 5’4″.
PAD, I love the idea of a shrieking violet. Much better than a nagging sunflower or a kvetching rose.
Miss Janey, I think you should throw that party and invite all of the bloggers.

  24. Lynn says

Wendy, I’m just 5’2″-ish, everything I wear that fits me fine are catered, so those nice vintage ones on any sites just don’t work for me 🙁
