The best thing about having this blog has been meeting or corresponding with new people*, who have included other bloggers, the inventor of Bumpe the Swedish Bull and a fabulous hair/clothing designer. This weekend, I was thrilled to bits to get an email from adorable ’90s designer Christian Francis Roth. I’ve written about him twice:
After reading his email 10 times to make sure I wasn’t having a hallucination, I wrote back and asked him what he was up to. He told me, “I closed my label in 1997 and have been working corporate design jobs for the past 10 years with companies like Nordstrom and Tommy Bahama. I’ve also done freelance creative consulting for Esprit, Anne Klein and Polo.” He’s been a busy bee.
I also asked Christian if he could send me some photos of pieces from his own label. As I’ve said, it’s very hard to find pictures of them online. Well, that’s not going to be a problem anymore!
First, two versions of the famous Rothola crayon dress.
Ay yi yi! I haven’t been keeping a close enough eye on eBay. A “Sky Blue” crayon dress sold YESTERDAY for $700.
And the Oxygen Tank jacket went for $225.
Back to Christian’s photos. I mentioned the egg-cellent breakfast suit here.
I like the asymmetry of the scribble suit.
I would be as happy as this model if I got to wear the pencil shavings suit!
Sure, Yves Saint Laurent did “le smoking” but this is a REAL smoking jacket!
If I had the smoking jacket, I fear the beret-wearing ladies from my vintage Moschino jacket might come to blows over Mr. Mustache.

I will have more photos from Christian tomorrow.
*I owe several of you peeps posts and/or tag responses. I haven’t forgotten!
**All photos — excluding the eBay photos and the photo of me — are courtesy Christian Francis Roth.

Those Rothola dresses are so, so cute, I’d like a Purple, please, Mr. Roth if you’re reading this…
And your Moshino jacket is fabulous!

I love the crayola dresses to pieces and the pencil shaving skirt needs to be mine.

lady lapels! love it.

Breakfast suit? Breakfast suit!!!!!!!
There is not enough theme dressing going on in the world.
That outfit needs a side order of a bacon purse.
WendyB says
Iron Chic, how about a bacon scarf?

I remember when Todd Oldham, Marc Jacobs, and Isaac Mizrahi did these 30 (or maybe 60?) minute infomercials on MTV, VH1, and Nick at Nite, respectively. I didn’t see the Marc Jacobs one, but the Oldham and Mizrahi shows were so entertaining. Every time I see them mentioned in print, I kick myself for not having bought one of the pieces.

I love Christian Roth! My very first pair of “good” sumglasses were his design–a metallic bronze-y gorgeous color–purchased the summer before I entered graduate school (in 1990!).
I’ve worn them every year since, until I tumbled down a flight of stairs on Cape Cod last summer and rendered them irrepairable.
Coincidentally, I surrendered them to the wastebasket only last Friday, while musing that I probably shouldn’t be doing so.

Dear Miss Cavendish,
This is Christian Roth, the designer of your ‘former‘ sunglasses.
I love your compliments. Thank you !
My reply to you comes a little late, only today, on a lazy Saturday afternoon in St. Tropez, I came across this blog and your comment.
First, please, never walk the stairs wearing dark shades. If you promise to be more careful, feel free to contact me through my website and I select you – at no charge – a pair of NEW specs. No strings attached.
And for the record ( all fashionistas know ): My Christian Roth sunglass brand ( active since 1984 ) has no relation at all with the work of the clothing designer Christian Francis Roth ( whom I respect a lot ).

Oh MissC, I regret to inform you that Christian Francis Roth of the punny clothes and Christian Roth of the sunglasses are two different peeps! I believe there was a business squabble over it at one point.

LBIC says
The Rothola crayon dress in purple should be in my closet. I don’t know why it isn’t so I’m going to have to give it a “talkin’ to”.
miss cavendish says
You’re kidding! Two different peeps?! That explains why the middle name would curiously appear and disappear from time to time. Thanks so much for the enlightenment!
WendyB says
LBIC, go for it! Give it “what for” as we say in my family.
MissC, I was confused long ago myself!
jennine says
ahh that’s great!
now i want to see a dress that looks like a tootsie roll.
pistols at dawn says
No forest green? I’m boycotting.
All right, I’m just not in the market for dresses, but “boycotting” sounds better.
Iheartfashion says
I want that fried egg dress. Brilliant!
enc says
I love all that stuff, it’s utterly wonderful. You look great in the beret-wearing lipstick ladies jacket.
The Clothes Horse says
I want a Crayon dress!
K.Line says
I LOVE this stuff. I would wear any of it happily! Thanks for the gorgeous pictures… K
WendyB says
Jennine, I don’t have a Tootsie Roll, but I hope you will be appeased by other candy.
PAD, I figured you for a Burnt Sienna guy. Of course, no one ever likes Burnt Sienna. Hmmm.
Heart, isn’t it cute? I like that it has the fried eggs AND the eggshells.
ENC, thank you very much. I felt a little foolish at first but then decided I enjoyed their company.
TCH, can you believe one just sold? Though it was that live auction part of eBay and I never buy there…there are so many weird charges.
K.Line, you’re welcome and there are more to come. I’m so happy he shared them with me. I was trying to find a Crayon picture forever.
Gloria says
Lol, your jacket is hilarious darling!
