Cowlick, Defined

November 20, 2013 by WendyB

At one of my old corporate jobs, we wimmins got to talking about hair and I mentioned the super-aggressive cowlick lurking in my bangs. One of my employees then asked me what a cowlick was and why it was called that.  I said, “It’s when your hair sticks up like a cow licked ya!” She looked a little dubious. If only this series of photos of a stray cat with its cow friend had existed then to illustrate my point.

Check out that tongue — it’s obvious why that could cause a problem with one’s ‘do. View the rest of the photos by Yochi Aranov Zwilling here to see how the cat looks after a thorough cow tonguing.

Here’s how I look if I leave my hair totally untamed.

I don’t know why this conversation has stuck with me for 10 years. The brain works in mysterious ways.

I too have a secret bang cowlick. Therefore I can never have the thick straight heavy bangs I want.

    🙁

I’ve got one in the back too!

I kinda forget about it till someone is doing my hair and is like “Damn! What do you have here!”

My husband has this! A huge swirl right in the middle of his hairline in front. He looks like his has those half up/half down 80s bangs if we do not work to tame it with a blow dryer and styling products. He told me that when he was a kid, his grandmother used to put a foam roller in it to try and fix it, lol

Oh yes, I have one or two myself, why I must do my hair every single day. Only a professional can wrangle it into submission for a 2 day hairdo.

When I wake up, mine is sticking up like Cameron Diaz’s hair in Something About Mary.

Yuck, getting licked by a cow sounds disgusting. Your cowlick is adorable. I swear that every single hair on my head is a cowlick. So annoying.

Ack cowlicks the bane of my hair existence! When I was younger I had one off-center in the front so a fringe always looked wonky. But that seems to have tamed over the years. The one that WILL NEVER LEAVE is at the back of the crown of my head and drives me insane. That’s one reason I always do messy ‘do’s as I can backcomb it into some semblance of submission! XXX
