Change of Taste

August 29, 2010 by WendyB

Baskin-Robbins brought back my favorite ’70s ice-cream flavor, Pink Bubblegum, for the month of August. My goal this weekend was to get a scoop before it was too late.

Goal achieved!

That is one craving I will never have again. Did this stuff always taste so bad? Damn! I still ate the whole scoop even though I cringed at every bite. (My attitude towards food is like the old joke: “Boy, the food at this place is really terrible … and such small portions.”) I felt so queasy after the ice cream that I couldn’t work up the enthusiasm to take an outfit picture, so you’ll have to settle for a picture of the exact same outfit in 2009: the vintage Ungaro dress, the gold Louis Vuitton shoes and my Gloriana necklace.

Blame Baskin-Robbins!

Goal achieved, but a Pyhrric one at that, it appears. Did it at least have actual bubblegum in it?

In family lore there is a story of my mother taking me at about age 7 and my 3 year old sister for some BR bubblegum ice cream in the 1970s. The sainted woman had to deal with copious amounts of pink-streaked ice cream dripping everywhere as she walked us back to the car. I’m assuming it was occasions like this that caused her to always keep a stash of Wet Ones in the glove compartment. I don’t think this flavor would hold the same thrill for me as an adult, and you’ve helped confirm that!

Hate when this happens but … it never ever happens with chocolate.

J’adore that flavor too!!! My 31 Flavors always has it… but I haven’t had it in years… hmmmm… maybe it’s time!

I’m willing to bet that you are the first person to ever wear that outfit to Baskin-Robbins. Nicely done.

As for the ice cream, it is like Thomas Wolfe wrote, “You Can’t Go Back to Baskin-Robbins to Eat Pink Bubblegum Ice Cream Again.” Or something like that.

Love the pink colour in fact for some reason I love eating pink food no matter how artificial it looks. I would definitely eat all of this although it sounds a bit sickly.

Maybe it’s accurate, bubble gum tastes really nasty after the first 3 seconds.

Tastes change and its been a long time since the 70s, probably the original ingredients are no longer available/acceptable to health and safety standards! I’d have polished it off too xx

When I saw on twitter that you were craving it, I cringed. I am sorry, though, that it wasn’t what you needed it to be.

I must say pink bubble gum ice cream does’nt sound overly appealing!! Funny how we crave certain things from childhood that never live up to the expectation. e xxxxxxxxx

I never understood what we were supposed to do with the gum balls. Chew them in an ever-increasing gob while eating the ice cream? Set them aside on a gooey napkin? Chew & swallow? It is truly a weird flavor.

I went to Baskin-Robbins on Friday night and for the FIRST TIME EVER in MY LIFE they did not have ‘chocolate fudge’. Seriously? So, no ice cream for me. I let the kids have the inferior flavors.

I’ve found I can no longer stand the taste of Pink Bubblegum in any form, although I admit I was never attracted to the idea of bubblegum flavored ice cream. ICK.

My similar story: I tried a twinkie on a whim a few months ago to see if they were as good as I remembered. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Never again.

Do you think they made the pink spoon and the ice cream out of the same ingredients? They’re suspiciously matchy-matchy to me.

Too bad the ice cream tasted so awful. Luckily you counteracted the awfulness with tastefulness in your outfit.

This sounds much like my found memories of the candy orgies at the mall when I was 13. It was heaven then, but now gummi bears crammed in a bag full of pixie stix and lick-a-maids sounds like a terrible hangover.
