What Would Carine Roitfeld Think?

February 19, 2010 by WendyB

I’m still in love with trompe l’oeil clothing. The latest piece to catch my eye is this vintage Moschino jacket with a pocket that looks like a purse.

Click for purchasing info from Katy Kane Vintage.

French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld once said, “… I do not like handbags. I do not wear handbags. It is not a nice look, to carry a handbag.โ€ Would she hate this jacket because it looks like it’s wearing a (shoulder) bag or would she love it because the purse is really a pocket? Inquiring minds want to know.

UPDATED TO ADD: I have to highlight Good Looking Corgi‘s amusing comment about the jacket: “The downside is that people will ask, ‘Are you going somewhere soon? You can put your purse down you know.'” Yep, that could be a problem.

OMG. I almost bought that jacket in the 80s. I was living in Montreal, I think – and I remember seeing it, trying it on countless times, and then deciding it wasn’t “practical”. What a dope I was.

I think Carine should go for it. Or does she have someone carry a purse for her? Or is she just too cool to need one?

Love it. It’s like one of those dresses that look like two separates put together. Now your jacket and purse will match and you will be less likely to forget your purse. The downside is that people will ask, “Are you going somewhere soon? You can put your purse down you know.” But I could deal with that while wearing such an awesome jacket.

I bet every handbag designer/company head died a little bit inside when Roitfeld said that.

But this jacket would have solved all her problems. If she likes Chanel, that is.

(The other night I was catching up on my episodes of “Damages,” and Patty gave Ellen a “Chanel” handbag that was “worth $3,000.” When I heard this I laughed out loud, because a) I haven’t heard of a new Chanel bag going for a price that low in years; b) the bag was far, far too large to ever squeak by at that low priceโ€”it would be more like $9-10,000 from what I know; c) even the smallest Chanel bags are going for $5,000+ these days, aren’t they? and c) I’ve never, ever seen that shape of Chanel bag in my life. (Mind you, one could exist and I wouldn’t know about it, but it was way too east west to convince me.))

“What would Carine Roitfeld do?” is my new all-purpose problem-solving question. Unfortunately, here I, too am stumped.

hmmm I think Carine would not care for this at all, with its indecisive nature. I on the other hand think it is super cute!

Hey here Wendy darling.. I wanted to let you know that I FINALLY was able to add some links to my site.. took forever moving to a new domain, etc….. I’d love it if you could add me, but not sure where I belong… I’m not a purely fashion or foodie blogger but I can say it sure is therapeutic for me and has saved me yen ($$) in therapy. “giggles”

I’m not liking the jacket or purse that much, and in remorse after selling my Birken this week = (

If I carried my Chanel 2.55 or chain wallet clutch while wearing this jacket, would it create a surplus of chain and quilted-ness?

    Cute jacket!

In addition to hating bags (which I love) I hear CR also doesn’t know how to use a computer, so as a role model she’s useless to me. :-p

That’s why Carine always has an entourage with her. One person carries her makeup, another carries her wallet, yet another carries her breath mints. The person who carried her tampons got laid off. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I don’t think Carine would go for the bag/jacket combo – is it a backet? And Style Artisan’s right about her entourage of fashion slaves (the tampon comment is hilarious!)

I’m not really a handbag person..I mean, I carry one I’ve just never really liked any purse I’ve ever owned.
They are never “right” enough. That is so my mom…gonna go shoot myself now.
    I dig that jacket though!

Wow, what a wild jacket! Not something I’d wear, but I really apprecite design that incorporates humor.

Elsa Schiaparelli is one of my all time fave designers (if not thee) all time fave. I always think of her when I see pieces like this, since she pretty much pioneered this concept for fashion.

ahh Moschino, always so quirky! This would be good for me, as I have ridiculously narrow shoulders that are absolutely shit at keeping straps on them. I’m forever hoisting my damn bags onto my shoulders!
As far as Carine is concerned……….I think she’d hate it.
