What Really Grinds My Gears

June 2, 2009 by WendyB

I’ve mentioned my love for the animated series Family Guy before. On one episode, Peter Griffin gets his own segment on the local news called “What Really Grinds My Gears.” Take a look.

The incest/period portion of that clip isn’t relevant to my post today. I don’t even have a brother, for God’s sake! You people and your perverted minds. I love you anyway. But I’ll tell you what really grinds my gears. A designer named Pam Hogg. She specializes in designing shiny catsuits best worn by pop stars and celebrity spawn.

Image from Stylefrizz

You regular gals who don’t want to look like C-3PO on the stroll can get the more conservative dress version of the look for 795 pounds at Browns.

The mere existence of this stuff doesn’t grind my gears. What bothers me is that gorgeous blogger and fashion adventurer Susie Bubble boldly modeled some of the Hogg catsuits for a fun post — only to have Hogg’s people complain that it was “bad publicity.” Susie, being the nice person that she is, took the original post down. I, being the bitch that I am, say, “Welcome to the world of bad publicity, Pam Hogg!”

I also want to say to you peeps that there are a lot of designers who are thrilled by your enthusiasm for their work. I am always honored when customers or admirers post photos of my jewelry. I started a fan page on Facebook just to share those pictures. Basically as long as you’re not stealing my designs — or making off with one of my rings (that can only be forgiven once, Britney) — take as many pictures as you like and let the world know how awesome I am! I know my designing friends Christian Francis Roth and Zang Toi feel the same way. So if you’re going to spend your money, spend it with those of us who appreciate your fine asses! Do we have a deal? I think we have a deal! Just don’t buy stuff, wear it and return it. Now THAT will piss me off.

UPDATED TO ADD: Racked.com posted on the topic with two of Susie’s photos. Susie looks like a beautiful robot, no? My robotic Hogan shoes would complete the look.

as a blogger, i got pissed when i heard what they said to susie. i mean, when we blog about designers we like, it's like free publicity on social media for them! word spreads like fire, and when a blog like susie's has a picture of a product, it's like a freaking advertisement!

as a designer myself, i'm even more annoyed. i can't imagine ever telling that to anyone. i really don't think i would ever want people like heidi montag in my clothes, no matter how unknown i am. people like susie however, with an obvious love for fashion and an adventurous streak like no other, i could kill to have her in my clothes.

add the fact that susie has blogged more than once about this particular hogg, i mean, how dare they. if they didn't want their clothes on susie, they could have at least done it in a nice and civilised way.

Damn straight! Especially the part on spending our money with you, I mean, designers who are pleased to have customers who are enthused about their work.

Also, Susie = Totally cuter than Peaches Geldof.

I hope this gets linked absolutely everywhere. It's one thing to be a little frustrated at obviously negative publicity, but to openly bitch about someone writing a post about you to the point that they have to take it down? That's just messed up.

I don't know man, I'm all for looking luscious and different and individual and unique and a bit out there but those are ugly. That's all. The dress is ok but the suits? Ick. Me no likey. Even for crazy, rock chick stage wear I don't find having a sweaty crotch all that fun. And those just scream "SWEATY CROTCH!"

I was flabbergasted to see what occurred with Susie. It just boggles my mind on where exactly Pam Hogg was coming from. It totally grinds my gears too.
The way they handled it was utterly unprofessional and shameful. They not only offended Susie, but they offended all of us.

Love catsuits; remember a Naf Naf one fondly. And bad publicity? Looks like Ms. Hogg is generating plenty of that on her own.

What a pretentious snob! How could she do that to Susie, who actually manages to make those freakshow clothes look good?! Talk about ungrateful.

I think Pam Hogg's clothing is beyond silly and unwearable in real life…who wants to look like a 60s sci-fi character walking down the street?

Still the blogger looks greta in the outfit and that the deisgner got upset by the post is beyond silly since she can use any good publicity she can get.

Her clothing is unique enough that not many people can wear it and to make a blogger have to take down their post is really stupid.

thank you for posting the pic of susie. i was curious to see the pic that launched a thousand pam hogg haters. susie looks SO COOL in that catsuit! way cooler than any of her "famous" customers (who probably don't even pay for the "clothes"). susie actually makes the catsuit look cool and wearable. major mistake on hogg's part.

thanks for the heads up on this. well if they thought that her wearing it was bad publicity, it's even "worse" now. but publicity is still publicity because even though i saw the original post i actually remember the designer's name now.

i like the expression, "what gets me goat" to "grinds my gears"

thanks for the public service announcement, i will think twice before i order a butt load of your jewelry, wear it to (fill in chain resturant of your choice here…) and then return it. that would be rude, and difficult to get the grease off the gems!

Personally I hate those catsuits and I think the only person I have seen look half decent in them is Susie.

I really can't comprehend how Pam Hogg can feel that she should have that kind of power over how her clothes are covered by bloggers or any kind of media. I think it's just plain rude.

    Susie's pic is absolutely cool!
Never thought that someone would get mad at her for this and consider it "bad publicity"… Haven't they heard the saying about it??? "There's no such thing as bad publicity, except your own obituary"…
Wendy, you DO know how to treat your customers! 🙂

  27. Hannah says

I can't believe they said that to Susie, as well as being unnecessary it's completely insulting. I wasn't actually very keen on her suits until I saw Susie wearing one. She actually made the suits look far more appealing to me than any of the celebrities snapped wearing them! She sort of brought it down to earth a little, made it seem less outrageous, which I think is a good think when it comes to clothes like these!

  28. Miss Peelpants says

Way back when, Pam Hogg was a brilliantly inventive designer. I've got a lot of vintage pieces by her, and although she scared me silly – I thought she seemed like an awesome person.

After all, she did stick a sign up in her shop once which said 'Fashion is Shit'.

But I guess fashion isn't so shit now is it Pam? Not when you've got Peaches Geldof to model your samey samey catsuits and the fashion press are prepared to fall over themselves because 'once upon a time' you had some original ideas and Siouxsie wears your stuff.

I'm keeping hold of a few vintage pieces, I may sell another few in protest. But it's nice to have a memory of a time when I could still admire her.

  29. Princess Poochie says

    June 3, 2009 at 6:48 am

I'm taking this as a public service announcement. I don't want to be wearing anything Peaches (gag) is wearing anyways.

Thank you Susie for warning me!

Oh, and tell Pam to suck it.

  30. StyleSpy says

I'm glad you posted the Bubble photo, because I missed it the first time around.

I really dont' see what Hogg's problem is. Susie looks great. That's not easy to pull off in something like this.

  32. K.Line says

    June 3, 2009 at 7:30 am

I commented on Susie's original Hogg post, advising how adorable I think the photos are. I cannot believe – seriously – that Pam's PR machinery could be so idiotic. Truly, Susie is great model of some rather challenging-to-wear (some may say unfortunate looking) shiny, synthetic cat suits. I'm appalled that she'd be made to feel bad for expressing her(cute)self.

  35. Jill says

Susie is a perfect candidate to wear one of these insane bodysuits. She looks fabulous in it and her hair is the only accessory needed. Hogg should be thanking the gods for such fab free press! What a ridiculous bitchy thing to do.

  42. K says

So the lady who designs shiny, lycra spandex unitards is picky about who's pictured wearing them? These look like costumes for Howard Moon from the Mighty Boosh (exhibit A: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IjGNJPNyzU)

I enjoy my British comedy duos as the next girl, but between a stylish, witty, beautiful fashion blogger and a pasty, skinny, male comedian who's wearing it as a joke, I'd take the former.

  44. lisa says

    June 3, 2009 at 11:45 am

I was really outraged when I found out about this too, especially after reading Susie's follow-up post and seeing how distraught she seemed. As for Susie's blog being bad publicity compared to celebrity spawn wearing Pam Hogg, well, I don't give a rat's ass about celebrity spawn but I read Style Bubble every day. I imagine others feel the same way and wouldn't give Pam Hogg a second glance if not for Susie's blogging.

  45. Cas Ruffin says

    June 3, 2009 at 12:42 pm

That's a bad look on Pam Hogg. Some designers don't appreciate what fashion bloggers do for them, but some do and use it to their advantage. The PR move was amateurish on Hogg's part.
