Try Wearing Just One Earring … Made by Wendy Brandes

August 17, 2013 by WendyB

The Cut fashion blog is excited by the single, large earrings seen on Christian Dior’s Fall 2013 runway. I’m with The Cut on this because I’ve adored that look since the ’80s, when I often wore one big earring to go with my big hair.

I photographed a lot of my original ’80s earrings last spring, including this favorite singleton.

If you look very closely, you can see me wearing that particular earring with my friend Jim’s turquoise jacket in this circa-1984 photo.

I was so consumed with my memories of single earrings last year that I hurried to add single styles to my WENDYB by Wendy Brandes diffusion line. But, considering that the one-off look has been out of the mainstream for a long time, I decided to go small in order to let people get accustomed to the idea. It can be hard to go out wearing a single big earring and answering all the questions about where the “missing” earring is. (That shit made me super-ornery when I was a teenager. “MOM! IT’S THE STYLE!!!!”) So I did studs rather than statement pieces. I introduced my first single stud earrings — my hashtag and “at sign” studs — last October.  Now I’ve got over 20 options in silver and gold!

The size is perfect if you want to experiment with earlobe asymmetry. My pieces are so petite you can easily wear a mismatched pair in a conservative work environment without scandalizing your colleagues. At the same time, you’ll still be edgier than the matchy-matchy peeps who are scared to mix metal colors, let alone earrings. You’ll also be even more of the moment because many of the designs — including my emoji studs — are inspired by social media. That modern twist appealed to me because I didn’t want to be a total ’80s throwback. Gotta keep up with the times. Next up? Small hoops to mix in with your WENDYB by Wendy Brandes studs. Stay tuned for those.

But if you ARE ready to go for a single statement earring, I recommend my shoulder-brushing, 4 1/2″-long Cleopatra designs.  Kim Cattrall wore the gold version as a pair in Sex and the City 2.

The silver version is perfect for this look. The silver Cleos are available as a pair on my website …

… but if you want to buy just one, I’m happy to accommodate you. Holla at me at wbjewelry at hotmail dot com and we’ll work it out!

Always love your vintage pics! Of course you are ahead of Dior. 🙂

Just Monday I wore my sole surviving airplane earring from the ’80s – I’m still posting outfits from June, but that one may jump the queue.

Oooh, I hadn’t thought about splitting up the Cleos. That’s a cool idea. I looove the little studs though. I think I’m gonna start wearing my bunny by itself 🙂

I spent the entire decade of the 1980s wearing mismatched and single earrings – mostly huge, shoulder brushing ones. Haven’t worn big earrings since, but maybe it’s time to incorporate the occasional one into an outfit. I love the turquoise leather jacket!

We had more fun with fashion in the ’80s, I swear!
