NYC Vice: Rings and Rap

May 1, 2013 by WendyB

When I introduced my swear ring set in 2008, people asked me why I chose to do four separate rings instead of one big ring that spanned four fingers.

The four swear rings on the hand of the gorgeous blogger behind Beautifully Invisible.

Actually, I got asked that question right up until last year, when a big fast-fashion retailer started selling the multi-ring look and suddenly it was okay. (That’s why I say, “Never Is the Next New Thing™.”) Anyway, my explanation was that the multi-finger single ring was popular in 2008, so I wanted to do something that felt a little different. I also found the big multi-finger rings too uncomfortable to wear. I don’t care to have my fingers locked into one position all day. Finally, the separate letter rings give me the flexibility to spell anything.

That flexibility came in handy (ha!) last night, when my gorgeous rapper friend Gangsta Boo told me she was going to be photographed by Verena Grotto for VICE.com’s New York State of Mind blog. Boo already had my NYC ring set, so I quickly pulled together a second set of rings to suit the occasion.

I did her nameplate necklace too.

Boo has been visiting from Atlanta, and I’m sad that she’s got to go home soon to put the finishing touches on her new mixtape, “It’s Game Involved.” I’ve had a good time running around town with her. In addition to visiting the offices of The Fader, we went to 50 Cent’s offices for her interview with ThisIs50.com …

… and met rapper Big K.R.I.T. at the Shade 45 studios.

Big K.R.I.T. and Boo, who is wearing my YOLO ring set.

But the highlight for me came last night. Boo was DJing at Lit Lounge, and shouted me out in a funny little rap.

She did a more serious freestyle after that, but I was too busy replaying the line “that’s some other white girl” to take more video! Thanks for the love, Boo. And if any of you readers are inspired to order up your own customized letter ring set, holla at me at wbjewelry at hotmail dot com. Don’t forget, you can also order custom letter necklaces.
