“I Thought Everybody Else Was Lost.”

September 7, 2011 by WendyB

The tenth anniversary of September 11 is coming up, and that day is very much on my mind. There’s a well-written story on Poynter.org called “How The Wall Street Journal’s improvised 9/11 battle plan helped it to a Pulitzer.” It quotes MrB extensively about the Wall Street Journal’s coverage of 9/11. He was the Wall Street Journal’s managing editor at the time.

It’s been on my mind too. I still freak when I hear sirens or helicopters. And people don’t realize that from 14th St down we were under martial law. Of course right where my shop was. I had to show my lease to get through to clean & tend the kitties.. We were cleaning for a year later and I hate to think what those ashes were aside from the buildings we watched burn for months from our corner. ):

Oh yeah, we know people who were homeless for a year. All the Battery Park people.

That is an incredible story. Hats off to Mr. B and his incredible, brave staff — and I’m very glad they all turned out to be ok.

I remember it better than yesterday too. It’s my birthday, and I was up early grading papers (I was in grad school at NYU and teaching) so I could go out that night. I was sitting in front of the TV watching New York 1. When the reporter said the plane was heading toward Tower 1 my roommate and I thought that some drunk rich person had commandeered a plane and was out of control. Not sure where that idea came from. I spent the morning running to the roof of my building to watching what was happening and then back down to my apartment to have what I’d just seen confirmed by the news. I wasn’t thinking about the fact that it had been ten years until I saw a piece about it in the Financial Times while I was in France last week. It’s weird to be in San Francisco–I’m not sure how to honor what happened from here. Wow. That was a long comment.

9/11 has been on my mind also. I was home sick today and after IFB was over (thank GOD for livestream) I watched some dvr’d 9/11 specials. In hindsight that probably was not the best idea since I fly to the west coast tomorrow. Nevertheless, I cannot believe it was 10 years ago. It is heavy on my heart.
    much luv to you,

Thanks for the links. I have only ever read UK media coverage of 9/11 (a fact I have only just realised) so will definitely be reading these. I was only 11 years old on September 11th, and didn’t fully grasp what it all meant, I just knew everything in the world had changed. As the years go on it just becomes more shocking and devastatingly sad. The spirit and courage of the people of New York is inspirational.

The article on Mr. B and how the WSJ kept working was fascinating. Miraculous, really.
