Throwback Thursday: Annie on Broadway in 1979

December 11, 2014 by WendyB

MrB and I went to a screening of the new movie adaptation of Annie last night. Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) makes an adorable Annie and Jamie Foxx plays Will Stacks, the updated version of Daddy Warbucks. I enjoyed watching a little boy next to me literally sitting on the edge of his seat during the dramatic moments.

I first saw Annie on Broadway in 1979 — I believe it was my first Broadway play — and it just so happens that my gorgeous sister keeps all her Broadway Playbills. After the movie screening, I emailed an urgent request for photos of the Annie Playbill.

Annie Playbill

This is a special souvenir because look who played Annie: 14-year-old Sarah Jessica Parker!

SJP

Look in the upper left corner.

According to SJP’s Playbill bio, she already had an impressive resume.

Big thanks to Terri Berry for saving this all of these years!

Annie was my first show, too, in San Francisco. I went with my mom and I think we might have eaten at Blum’s, not sure. I just looked up who was in it: “The 2nd National Touring Company (sometimes referred to as the West Coast or Los Angeles Production) opened in San Francisco on June 22, 1978 with Patricia Ann Patts starring as Annie, Jennifer Cihi as Pepper and the then-unknown Molly Ringwald as one of the orphans.”

    Wow.

I guess the lesson to be learned is that we should get autographs from allllll child actors just in case they grow up to be amazing. LOL.

Aww, that’s cool nostalgia right there.

I recently found a Dec. 29 1990 ticket stub to Mandy Patinkin at Lincoln Center. Twenty four years ago. I was eleven. It’s up on my fridge now. My mother and aunt, who I went with, cannot believe I still have this!

I love things like that (I also love Mandy). Check out this stub that my high school friend dug up at the end of this post http://wendybrandes.com/blog/2011/01/colorful-biker-jackets-and-80s-hair/

Holy cow girl! That’s a souvenir for sure… bet it’s worth a pretty penny. SJP was a cutie pie; I don’t think I’ve ever seen her pre Square Pegs 😉

I didn’t realize the new Annie was THAT girl! She was incredible in the ‘Beasts’ film.
