What Wendy Didn’t Wear: A Smile, a Skirt, a Smiling Skirt

September 5, 2010 by WendyB

According to the calendar, there are two weeks of summer left, but we all know that Labor Day weekend is when the season really ends. I figured I’d go to the beach and hide my depression about the coming cold months and shorter days with the help of a smiling Castelbajac skirt I got in July. Unfortunately, the zipper broke before I left the room and I had to cut the skirt off me! Another repair job for Jean at Ghost Tailor. I took the skirt to the beach anyway to photograph it.

Due to zipper failure, this skirt didn't turn my frown upside down.

I wasn’t a fan of the 100°-plus temperatures we had in New York this summer, but I’m definitely not a cold-weather person. As far as autumn/winter fashion goes, all those gray “draped” and “boyfriend” sweaters look baggy and blah to me. Really, I feel like July 4 was yesterday. Do the years go faster and faster or is it just me? At least there’s one benefit to my ever-increasing “time flies” feeling: it will be October in two minutes, December in 10 minutes and summer again before the day is done!

Sigh.

My dad made an observation about aging once, just recently while I was riding in my dad’s new old ’79 Corvette (with the T-tops off and functional side pipes from the previous owner). He said that when we enter a new decade of our lives (he’s 50, I’ll be 32 in two weeks–1 minute using your watch), the first five years fly by quickly while the second half go as fast a slug doused in salt.

As for summer… I’m glad the heat is almost gone, too. I yearn for the grey skies during the day, the colours of the leaves signally the arrival of autumn, and the opportunity to wear really nice boots, jeggings and cowl-necked sweaters, listening to Alizée and Fields of the Nephilim on my Sansa Fuze… ahh.

But freezing sucks, so I agree with you there.

That skirt should have a frown now that summer is over.

Ours never came, so I have a different feeling from yours: one of never-endingness. Not fast, fly-by days, but draggy, overcast, plodding 60-degree boredom.

Now the sun’s out, but it’s still 60 degrees. It’s the same day, over and over! It’s Groundhog Day!

Anyway, I agree in a general sense that time flies. I can’t believe it’s already almost Labor Day, and that Halloween is next month, and the holidays are fast behind.

Hate when that happens. But this skirt is so worthy of a fix and save, too cute and happy.

See, I love autumn, but I fucking hate winter. So I always feel ambivalent about the arrival of Labor Day Weekend.

I’m sorry to hear of the betrayal of this zipper. I hope you can get your skirt fixed soon!

Totally with you on being sad about summer ending. I never feel like I make the most of it. It will be nice to not sweat though but I hate lugging around 10 pounds of coat and scarf with me just to leave the house.

Those drapey open front sweaters… I’m thinking something fun with big safety pins to sleek them up a bit!

    Shame about the skirt!
Time does fly, but the day to day is painfully slow. I feel like I was in vegas just yesterday and that was already over a year ago.

I’m a tweener weather person. I don’t like it sweltering…I don’t like it freezing. Guess I should be living in California. HA!

We could do with some of your weather over here in good old blighty, We simply do not have a summer anymore. I can’t remember the last time we had a long period of hot weather as for the years getting faster and faster that’s just cus there’s not enough time in the day for us to do all the things we want to do or it could just be we are getting that little bit older. Love the smiling skirt looks like a new baddy in pacman lol.

Oh, that skirt. I love it. It’s so perfect, aside from the zipper issue.

Yes, it was just July 4th. I hope winter goes quickly, and snowlessly, this year.
