Best J. Crew Ad Ever

November 15, 2008 by WendyB

Just as I was posting about J. Crew’s “matchstick”-cut, neon pink corduroys earlier this week, gorgeous blogger Karen of Of a Certain Age was getting the same cords in an intense citron color. How desperately do you want these now?

Karen looks amazing!

After seeing this photo, I feel like anyone with any sense at all should run out and buy these cords. As you’ve seen, I’m partial to an intense yellow, especially on one’s lower half. But since I already have a long skirt and a not-yet-photographed short skirt in similar hues, I feel like I should abstain from citron cords before I end up with an all-acid-yellow wardrobe. Dang! “Aubergine” is a nice color that J. Crew has available in a bootcut. Maybe I should go for that instead.

Or perhaps bright persimmon?

Or should I stick to the matchstick style and get it in “sweet potato,” which is on major sale?

Or should I do what I did last year and spend so much time pondering the colors that by the time I’ve made a decision, it’s summer? What do you think?

UPDATED TO ADD: Take my poll on the right!

UPDATED AGAIN TO ADD: I should note that the lovely Jean of Ghost Tailor, a J. Crew cord-wearer herself (she got the bootcuts and altered them), informed me that in previous years, the purple was much brighter in person than in photographs. That’s what I’d be hoping for.

I like the aubergine, but I tend to do exactly what you describe; spend months deliberating on the style and color of a winter coat and decide just before Memorial Day.

Karen really does look amazing in that ensemble, doesn’t she?

They are gorgeous, I wouldn’t wear them as it’s way too much colour for me but I do like the look of them. I need a smaller does, that citron colour but in a mini skirt perhaps!

I think you should do the red. It suits your personality and it will go well with your lipstick. But aubergine is a personal fave. Mind you, I think with cords it’s best to be adventuresome with colour – or they can look a bit “mom-like” conservative (gasp)

I love all the colors. If it helps, I have a pair of Uniqlo cords in dark purple I wear all the time. I voted for “decide next summer” because I love them all!

I voted “sweet potato,” because I think you need some orange.

As for what cut to wear, you already know how I feel about the matchstick version of these, but I think they’ll be great on YOU.

Or, get bootcut and tailor them.

very cool. though, I find it annoying that Jcrew’s stuff seems to be oversized, thats the only brand ill fit into a 2-4. very odd LOL

I vote purple, or ‘aubergine’. But I don’t like to say that word because I hate it in food form so much.

Still, I think purple will look fantastic with your mainly black day-wardrobe.

And as for an all-acid-yellow wardrobe, I don’t see how that could be a bad thing…

I love the Aubergine and Sweet potato equally, but voted sweet potato because it’s more radical and unusual. Wonder if I can get them over here?

Aubergine is winning but I say it’s dull! Go for the citron!

I agree with K.Line, these should be in an adventurous color! Part of the citron’s charm is the unexpectedness of it! The aubergine is far less exciting!

So I’m partial to the citron or the persimmon, although the cut of the sweet potato looks flattering.
Oh gosh I just looked at your link to the hot pink ones! I love them!! I have never found a pair of j crew pants that didn’t make me look like a flat-assed suburbanite, but Maybe these are the ones!!!

Augergine is the most subdued, so I’d suggest one of the brighter pairs . . .

OH dear Wendy, you’ve gone and made me famous! I’m honored. I did something RIGHT fashionwise? And I’m old! YAY! Wendy, with your style personality, I recommend the pink or citron. Aubergine is too subdued to have the desired, “Screw You, Yes I Am Walking Around New York City In This Color” effect.

Bloggers: Listen, I don’t think that photo shows how neon these things are. But they are so comfy that after awhile you forget about the color.
Violetville: They DO make me look like a flat-assed suburbanite, but that is because I really do have a flat ass. Our family calls it the “Noassitol” disease. If you want to wear pants, get the underwear with butt chicklets in them!

I am tremendously late to this thread, however, while I love the Aubergin (purple one), and think that it will work very well against silver jewelery… I am a huge fan of adding bold splashes of colour during Winter. To which end, the persimmon (red) is almost like a burst of a confident smile. Though in my estimation Gold jewelery would help carry that warm look.
