He is survived by his partner of 16 years, the wonderful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewtobias.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Tobias<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Only-Investment-Guide-Youll-Ever\/dp\/0156029634\" target=\"_blank\">financial guru<\/a> and the treasurer of the Democratic National Committee. He is also survived by his father, his four sisters and four brothers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_9446\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9446\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9446\" title=\"charles (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/charles-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"192\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From my 2001 wedding: Charles with MrB and me.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p>Charles graduated from FIT and apprenticed at Bill Blass and Christian Dior. He joined Ellen Tracy in 1990 and went on to become its chief designer. He left Ellen Tracy in 2001 to join Anne Klein, then surprised the fashion world in 2003 by quitting to volunteer for Howard Dean&#8217;s presidential campaign. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasplash.com\/publish\/cat_index_Style_and_Fashion\/Charles_Nolan_s_Fall_2004_Line.php\" target=\"_blank\">After Dean dropped out of the race, Charles started a self-named line<\/a>, which was sold at Saks and in his own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesnolan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">downtown boutique<\/a>. He was well-known for using non-models, including swimmer <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/daily\/fashion\/2008\/09\/dara_torres_makes_runway_debut.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dana Torres<\/a>. Photo source: Facebook.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Charles <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/any-friend-of-andys-is-friend-of-mine\/\" target=\"_blank\">called me Anita<\/a> after I showed up at a Ricky Martin concert in Miami dressed like an escapee from West Side Story.\u00a0 I called him &#8220;Shar-less&#8221; after he told me that an employee pronounced his name that way. MrB and I still have the plants Andy and Charles sent us as a housewarming gift in 2000. Not only do we have them &#8212; the only plants we&#8217;ve ever had &#8212; MrB dotes on them. When MrB is traveling, he calls to make sure I&#8217;m watering his plants (or &#8220;my plants,&#8221; as he calls them). Click to shop.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last week, when I heard the end was near, I emailed Andy to tell Charles that if more designers were like him, people would have a good reason to admire the fashion industry. You know how people say, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/Pretty+is+as+pretty+does\" target=\"_blank\">Pretty is as pretty does<\/a>&#8220;? Well, if chic is as chic does, Charles was as chic as it gets.
