I spent Thanksgiving<\/a> weekend at my sister’s house in Florida, wearing my usual black-top-and-jeans combo<\/a>. Even before my now-two-year-old nephew, Sebastian Berry<\/a>, was born, I didn’t dress up to hang out with the family at home. Now that Sebastian has joined us, I spend a lot of time sitting on the floor playing, so casual is mandatory.<\/p>\n

This fall, Sebastian’s neighborhood had a bumper crop of acorns. When I saw all of the acorns on the ground, I said, “Look at all these acorns!” Sebastian liked the sound of that. “All these acorns!” he repeated several times. Then he recruited me to help him pick them up while the family paparazzo (my father and Sebastian’s proud grandpa, GeorgeB) snapped away.<\/p>\n

For the duration of the visit, “Aunt Wendy, play!” meant one thing: “Pick up acorns.”<\/p>\n

I’ve always liked acorns. I did my Victorian-inspired 18K gold acorn necklace in 2008. <\/a>That acorn opens up to reveal a tiny squirrel inside<\/a>. I also designed a silver acorn necklace sans<\/em> squirrel. You can buy it here<\/a>. I’m going to show that one to Sebastian next time I see him — and quickly explain that this particular acorn does NOT get pushed into a hole or thrown in a pool.
