{"id":8352,"date":"2010-11-26T01:22:20","date_gmt":"2010-11-26T06:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/?p=8352"},"modified":"2016-04-03T21:54:44","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T01:54:44","slug":"new-york-style-icon-post-punk-scenester-anya-phillips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/new-york-style-icon-post-punk-scenester-anya-phillips\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Style Icon: Post-Punk Scenester Anya Phillips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you&#8217;ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know that my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\" target=\"_blank\">jewelry designs<\/a> are largely inspired by interesting historical women, including <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/pro-detail.php?colid=33&amp;collect=true&amp;id=499\" target=\"_blank\">Cleopatra<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/pro-detail.php?colid=28&amp;collect=true&amp;id=179\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth I<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/pro-detail.php?colid=33&amp;collect=true&amp;id=407\" target=\"_blank\">Anne Boleyn<\/a>. But I&#8217;m also fascinated by ladies of more recent vintage such as <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/sally-randall-new-york-style-icon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sally Randall<\/a>, the mid-&#8217;80s New York It girl whom I wrote about in February.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A pre-Sally It girl &#8212; Anya Phillips &#8212; has been periodically on my mind since I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Please-Kill-Me-Uncensored-History\/dp\/0140266909\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk<\/em><\/a> by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain in 1997. Anya was a powerful presence on New York&#8217;s punk and post-punk scene in the late &#8217;70s and early &#8217;80s. She was a co-founder of New York&#8217;s famed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mudd_Club\" target=\"_blank\">Mudd Club<\/a>, which was name-checked, along with the influential club <a href=\"http:\/\/cbgb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBGB<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Talking_Heads\" target=\"_blank\">Talking Heads<\/a> song <a href=\"http:\/\/consequenceofsound.net\/2010\/07\/11\/rock-history-101-talking-heads-life-during-wartime\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Life During Wartime<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/obAtn6I5rbY\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In <em>Please Kill Me<\/em>, Sylvia Reed, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/node\/41222\" target=\"_blank\">Lou Reed&#8217;s ex-wife<\/a>, describes Anya as &#8220;&#8230;incredibly difficult, incredibly talented and incredibly troubled &#8230;&#8221; Anya was also incredibly tragic, dying of cancer at age 26.\u00a0 <a href=\"..\/2010\/11\/what-wendy-wore-smells-like-teen-spirit\/\" target=\"_blank\">In a recent post<\/a>, I wrote about Courtney Love, &#8220;&#8230;&#8217;talented but troubled,&#8217; which is so intriguing in a 20-something, is damn sad in a 40-something.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/27_Club\" target=\"_blank\">If you want to be a tragic pop-culture icon, you better die at 27 <\/a>&#8230;&#8221; Well, Anya qualifies as intriguing. She jumped off the page and into my brain, where she probably dislodged something crucial, like my bank-account number. She dressed like a whore. I mean, we were all sort of dressing like that, we always wore the stilettos. Click for info source.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you can see if you look closely, the dress has a strappy S&amp;M top like the blue dress Anya is wearing in the photos above. One strange way to get a better look at Debbie&#8217;s dress is on this &#8220;Debbie Harry&#8221; Barbie doll. He remembers her as, &#8220;Really very beautiful, and smart and sophisticated &#8211; she was more 30&#8217;s movie star than anyone else on the scene. And she designed all sorts of wonderful clothes &#8230; for her company Eso-terrorist Productions.&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Klaus_Nomi\" target=\"_blank\">According to Wikipedia<\/a>, Anya connected Hoffman to punkish German countertenor Klaus Nomi, which resulted in a successful musical collaboration.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At the same time as the <em>Off-White<\/em> album, James Chance released the album <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/James-Chance-The-Contortions-Buy\/release\/937025\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Buy<\/em><\/a> under the name James Chance &amp; the Contortions. Anya took the cover photo for that album. I am guessing that she designed the strappy bikini too, since it&#8217;s so similar to her own blue dress and Debbie&#8217;s pink dress.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8366\" style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/viewimages?release=937025\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8366\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8366 \" title=\"buy\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/buy.jpg\" width=\"479\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/buy.jpg 599w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/buy-300x266.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Chance &amp; The Contortions &#8220;Buy&#8221; album cover.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2010, <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/04586-james-chance-interview-twist-your-soul\" target=\"_blank\">James recalled<\/a> Anya&#8217;s relationship with his fellow No-Waver, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lydia-lunch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lydia Lunch<\/a>, as well as Anya&#8217;s high profile:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>&#8220;Well, for one thing they really didn&#8217;t like each other very much! Even though actually, before Anya was managing me, she did make a short-lived attempt to manage Lydia, but that didn&#8217;t work out very well, (laughs). I don&#8217;t think any of the things that Anya found for Lydia to do, she never did any of them, and just found her own gigs anyway, it was kind of a fiasco! Even before I really knew Anya, when I was hanging out with Lydia, Anya was someone who really stood out on the scene, she was very visible, everyone knew who she was, and Lydia would say things like, &#8216;Let&#8217;s do something to Anya!&#8217; All these plots against Anya\u2026 she never actually did anything about them but there was definite animosity there!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anya dabbled in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1867329\/\" target=\"_blank\">acting<\/a> too, with a role in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0077573\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Amos Poe&#8217;s <em>The Foreigner<\/em><\/a> (1978). Debbie Harry also appeared in that movie.<\/p>\n<p>Anya seems to have been a full-time provocateur. Her one-time roommate, photographer Eileen Polk, says in <em>Please Kill Me<\/em>, &#8220;Anya had a diary that she kept in the bathroom by the toilet, so if you went in her bathroom, instead of picking up a magazine, you could read her diary. Every guy she had sex with was rated in the diary. And a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rip-her-to-shreds.com\/archive_press_magazines_mojoclassicmarch2008.php\" target=\"_blank\">Mojo Magazine<\/a> Blondie profile says, in reference to Debbie Harry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;In July 1981, the singer was devastated when her close friend Anya Phillips lost a two-year battle with cancer. Anya had been one of Harry&#8217;s closest confidantes since her days waitressing at White&#8217;s pub in New York. &#8216;She was a powerful energy source that&#8217;s now missing from the scene,&#8217; said Debbie. &#8216;Anya&#8217;s death was a particularly personal loss for us.'&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Once in a while, I stumble across a tribute to Anya. Artforum article on <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.basquiatbiography.com\/news\/muddclubreunion\" target=\"_blank\">Mudd Club-regular<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.basquiatbiography.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jean-Michel Basquiat <\/a>and other artists:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;I think now about Anya Phillips who so briefly illuminated this fleeting world. Click for more of Obsidian fist&#8217;s work.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a way, Anya&#8217;s younger brother, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fei_Xiang\" target=\"_blank\">Kris Phillips<\/a> (now known as Fei Xiang) picked up where Anya left off by becoming a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1191525\/bio\" target=\"_blank\">big pop star in Asia<\/a> in the &#8217;80s. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onlineusanews.com\/fei-xiang-4407.php\" target=\"_blank\">He first became famous in Taiwan<\/a>, where he and Anya grew up. Then he made a splash in mainland China, much to the Taiwan government&#8217;s dismay. Maybe he shares Anya&#8217;s provocateur gene.
