Movie director Joel Schumacher described Tiger as, &#8220;&#8230;a society girl from a good family wearing very straight clothes, and all of a sudden the next day she was a speed freak with her hair wired, wearing electric dresses and green glasses.&#8221; Richie Berlin, a daughter of the chairman of Hearst and a part of Andy Warhol&#8217;s circle, reminisced about Diana Dew:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Diana Dew, the electric-dress designer for <a href=\"http:\/\/vintagefashionguild.org\/label-resource\/paraphernalia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paraphernalia<\/a> <\/em>[a boutique that also sold early Betsey Johnson]<em>, had those dresses where the tits would light up; or you could flash the crotch and that would go off. But they weren&#8217;t fool-proof, and one night two girls went totally off in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maxskansascity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Max<\/a>&#8216;s! I mean, <\/em><em>right off. They went BOOM! It&#8217;s true.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That was about the extent of my knowledge about these ladies in the pre-Google days, except for a pair of Morse lounging pajamas that I lusted for at vintage site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enokiworld.com\/goods\/tigermorselounge.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Enokiworld<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8857\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enokiworld.com\/goods\/tigermorselounge.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8857\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8857 \" title=\"tigermorselounge\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/tigermorselounge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/tigermorselounge.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/tigermorselounge-165x300.jpg 165w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I finally decided to buy this Tiger Morse artifact, only to find someone else beat me to it.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But this year I unexpectedly hit the Diana Dew-Tiger Morse jackpot at <a href=\"http:\/\/taffetadarlings.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">gorgeous blogger\/designer Stacy Lomman<\/a>&#8216;s apartment, where I picked up her copy of the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Radical-Rags-Fashions-Joel-Lobenthal\/dp\/0896599302\" target=\"_blank\">Radical Rags: Fashions of the Sixties<\/a> by Joel Lobenthal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5465\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Radical-Rags-Fashions-Joel-Lobenthal\/dp\/0896599302\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5465\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5465 \" title=\"dianadewdress\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/dianadewdress.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"466\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/dianadewdress.jpg 466w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/dianadewdress-174x300.jpg 174w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 466px) 100vw, 466px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diana Dew wearing her own light-up dress. Click to buy book.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to Lobenthal, Dew was an electrical engineer who flaunted a different hair color every day and created a miniature battery pack that attached to the belt of a dress to create blinking hearts and stars. &#8220;They&#8217;re hyperdelic transsensory experiences,&#8221; she said of her garments to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,843346,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Time Magazine<\/a> in 1967, the same year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/archive\/1967\/01\/28\/1967_01_28_026_TNY_CARDS_000284381\" target=\"_blank\">The New Yorker wrote about her<\/a>.\u00a0 (If your wired mini breaks down, &#8220;Please just take it to the nearest radio-TV repair shop,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,843346,00.html#ixzz18i2aO77R\" target=\"_blank\">Dew said<\/a>.) Click to buy the book.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Famed fashion illustrator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/comment\/obituaries\/article390409.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Eula<\/a> told Lobenthal that Morse arrived at a Metropolitan Museum of Art party &#8220;all lit up, strapped with batteries from her shoes to her sunglasses.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/category\/fashion-repeats-itself\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fashion repeats itself!<\/a> Katy Perry was just picking up where Tiger left off.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, as Joel Schumacher said, Tiger was heavily into amphetamines. Lobenthal was told this story by another (unnamed) designer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;An editor was describing to me how when you were sent clothes from a designer&#8217;s showroom, you were usually sent the clothes neatly wrapped &#8212; period. When Tiger sent something over, you got the dress as well as the misplaced cotton ball or syringe cap.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Radical Rags, by the end of the &#8217;60s, Morse was waiting tables at hot spot Max&#8217;s Kansas City and liquidating her possessions to raise money, though she kept her antique clothing, silk-screened vinyl dresses and &#8220;prototype white sequin electric dress.&#8221; She died of an overdose of sleeping pills in 1972.\u00a0 (Lobenthal doesn&#8217;t say what happened to Diana Dew so if anyone knows, holla at me.)<\/p>\n<p>One of the Morse quotes in Radical Rags reminds me of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\" target=\"_blank\">my own jewelry designs<\/a>. Morse said, &#8220;I&#8217;m making dresses that make noises, I&#8217;m making dresses that whisper, dresses that smell.&#8221; I bet she would have liked my jewelry that <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/pro-detail.php?colid=29&amp;collect=true&amp;id=421\" target=\"_blank\">unscrews<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/jewels-of-the-month-hathor-ring-and-earrings\/\" target=\"_blank\">swivels<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/pro-detail.php?colid=30&amp;collect=true&amp;id=503\" target=\"_blank\">whistles<\/a>. Maybe I need to do some electrified jewelry next. Until I figure that out, I&#8217;d happily settle for wearing this fuzzy, glowing coat.
