Even a lost battle can lay the groundwork for future victories. Not just in the short term, either: Acts of resistance provide inspiration for generations to come. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/role-model-auschwitz-activist-roza-robota\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In fact, I wrote about one of my inspirations, Auschwitz activist R\u00f3\u017ca Robota<\/a>, on Jan. 27, 2020, just two days before my first arrest in D.C. Robota&#8217;s words to her comrades &#8212; &#8220;Be strong and of good courage&#8221; &#8212; stayed in my mind and kept me calm during both Capitol actions.  I needed a soothing mantra during the Rotunda event, because the cops certainly turned out in force.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Police cleared the rotunda as they prepared to arrest the group. Everyone else on their tour \u2014 members of the same anti-Trump activist community \u2014 were escorted out. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ImpeachmentDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ImpeachmentDay<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2Dx8f57hHs\">pic.twitter.com\/2Dx8f57hHs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Marissa J. Photojournalist George De Castro Day, who was there taking pictures, later wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;This spot, by the way, is enormously symbolic. They are behind the velvet ropes, which mark the path between the House and Senate. When the House Managers delivered the Articles of Impeachment, they walked through here. It is the center of the Rotunda. The &#8216;Apotheosis of George Washington,&#8217; the fresco on the ceiling, is high above. The spot that was to be George and Martha Washington&#8217;s tomb, which is empty because the family preferred to keep them on Mt. Vernon, is directly below. This is the symbolic heart and crossroads of Congressional power.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><center><div id=\"attachment_46059\" style=\"width: 508px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46059\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rotundarope-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"327\" class=\"size-full wp-image-46059\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rotundarope-2.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rotundarope-2-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by George De Castro Day.<\/p><\/div><\/center><\/p>\n<p>In a cruel twist of fate, this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/insurrection-at-the-capitol\/2021\/02\/03\/963598638\/lawmakers-honor-slain-capitol-police-officer-brian-sicknick-in-rotunda\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick lay in honor in the same location<\/a>, after being beaten to death by the right-wing mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6. (Two other Capitol Police officers who responded to the siege have since died by suicide.) Compare the law-enforcement reaction our small, peaceful group got to that received by the insurrectionists this year when &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/crime-courts\/fbi-nypd-told-capitol-police-about-possibility-violence-riot-senior-n1253646\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">despite advance warning of violence<\/a> &#8212; the Capitol Police were left <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/capitol-police-reject-federal-help-9c39a4ddef0ab60a48828a07e4d03380\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unprepared by their leadership<\/a>. So much for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/why-the-blue-lives-matter-thugs-were-so-quick-to-kill-a-cop-at-the-capitol-riots\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Lives Matter<\/a>.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rotundamsnbc-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"327\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rotundamsnbc-1.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/rotundamsnbc-1-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>If Mitch McConnell&#8217;s Senate had held a lawful trial with witnesses and evidence last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/impeachment-senate-trump-acquitted\/2021\/01\/08\/157fb03e-515c-11eb-bda4-615aaefd0555_story.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the events of this January 6 would never have happened<\/a>. Trump would have been convicted and removed from office months before the presidential election. That would have deprived him of the opportunity to tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/01\/16\/957291939\/can-the-forces-unleashed-by-trumps-big-election-lie-be-undone\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Big Lie<\/a> that is being used as a weapon against democracy by authoritarians of all types, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2021\/02\/04\/how-one-billionaire-family-bankrolled-election-lies-white-nationalism--and-the-capitol-riot\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oligarchs<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/26\/politics\/marjorie-taylor-greene-democrats-violence\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">QAnon followers who have infiltrated Congress<\/a> much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theholocaustexplained.org\/the-nazi-rise-to-power\/how-did-the-nazi-gain-power\/1933-elections\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Nazis gained power through elections in 1933 Germany<\/a>.  Because we still can&#8217;t count on Republicans to do the right thing in Trump&#8217;s historic second impeachment trial, what the country needs is televised hearings that expose the actions of everyone involved in the violence last month &#8212; the way televised hearings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/cold-war\/army-mccarthy-hearings\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revealed Joseph McCarthy in 1954<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/televised-watergate-hearings-begin\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Watergate in 1973<\/a>.
