{"id":4406,"date":"2010-02-25T15:58:12","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T20:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/?p=4406"},"modified":"2010-02-25T18:46:25","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T23:46:25","slug":"kornheiser-storm-and-age-appropriate-dressing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/kornheiser-storm-and-age-appropriate-dressing\/","title":{"rendered":"Kornheiser, Storm and Age-Appropriate Dressing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sports network <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN<\/a> had a &#8220;Jane, you ignorant slut&#8221; moment recently when Tony Kornheiser, host of its <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/espnradio\/show?showId=pti\" target=\"_blank\">Pardon the Interruption<\/a> program, said on his radio show that ESPN television anchor Hannah Storm was wearing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/national\/espn_talker_in_hot_water_over_comments_2olXLO2oQciHDN8pAlWdNJ\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She&#8217;s got on red go-go boots and a Catholic school plaid skirt &#8230; way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"512\" height=\"296\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/embed\/OWurlmoy0Ys6p3Hb_Bm6vQ\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"512\" height=\"296\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/embed\/OWurlmoy0Ys6p3Hb_Bm6vQ\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/sports\/2010-02-23-espn-suspends-tony-kornheiser_N.htm?csp=hf\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today<\/a>, the &#8220;kicker&#8221; was his comment: &#8220;She&#8217;s what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point.&#8221; (I think the kicker was the &#8220;&#8230;maybe early 50s&#8221; line, seeing as<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hannah_Storm\" target=\"_blank\"> Storm is 47<\/a>.) Kornheiser also said, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/article\/20100224\/SPORTS18\/2240342\/1066\/Sports18\/No-pardon-ESPN-suspends-Tony-Kornheiser\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;She&#8217;s got on her typically very, very tight shirt. Context is the issue. If Storm were going to the grocery store or a casual dinner out or a sports event as a spectator, she has the legs and figure to carry this off. But on TV shows and networks where viewers might expect a certain <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gravitas\" target=\"_blank\">gravitas<\/a> from on-air talent, an anchor or in-studio reporter probably doesn&#8217;t want an outfit to say &#8220;cute.&#8221;\u00a0 She would be better off with clothes that proclaim &#8220;powerful&#8221; \u00a0or &#8220;in charge.&#8221; On other shows and networks, the standards are different. If <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giuliana_Rancic\" target=\"_blank\">Giuliana Rancic <\/a>of E! Click for source.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Storm&#8217;s context is the &#8220;guys who watch sports&#8221; demographic. Need I say more about that audience&#8217;s conservative mindset? Just check out <a href=\"http:\/\/nextround.net\/2010\/02\/24\/slutty-outfits-on-espn-sets-a-photo-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\">this NextRound post<\/a> on &#8220;Slutty Outfits on ESPN Sets.&#8221; I think the only things that would qualify as non-slutty here are Hillary Clinton pantsuits and burkas. Of course, the pantsuits would be derided as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/dykey\" target=\"_blank\">dykey<\/a> and burkas would be criticized for revealing women&#8217;s naughty, sexy eyes. You can&#8217;t please all of the people all of the time &#8230; and there are places where you can&#8217;t ever please them.\u00a0 I suspect sports television falls into the latter category when it comes to women&#8217;s appearances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This does bring up an aspect of my <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/category\/wear-what-you-want\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wear What You Want<\/a>\u2122 policy that I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/middle-of-next-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">mentioned before<\/a>. My policy is about trying <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/middle-of-next-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">something new<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/oscars-2008-best-dress-and-jewelry\/\" target=\"_blank\">having fun <\/a>whenever the occasion permits. There are times when, if people don&#8217;t like your look, you just say, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/05\/i-thought-i-looked-purrfect\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fuck you! My new favorite example of inappropriate dressing is the mother of a groom who insisted on wearing a pale, pale, pale, pale &#8230; really pale! &#8230; pink dress to her son&#8217;s wedding. Basically, she was wearing white, with the barest hint of pink . She could have saved a lot of money if she skipped the gown and carried a homemade sign that said, &#8220;I&#8217;m psychotic!&#8221; because that&#8217;s the message sent by wearing white to your son&#8217;s wedding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So <a href=\"..\/category\/wear-what-you-want\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wear What You Want<\/a>\u2122 but be prepared for the consequences and learn how to distinguish minor consequences (Giuliana Rancic doesn&#8217;t like your Oscar gown, little kids point and stare at your rainbow-hued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manicpanic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Manic Panic<\/a> hair) from major consequences (your family has you committed, the Taliban beats you mercilessly). If you&#8217;re up for dealing with major consequences, more power to you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As for the Kornheiser vs Storm case, I&#8217;m going to take a guess at Hannah Storm&#8217;s thoughts in the very order in which she had them.
