It took some effort — a pair of Spanx, a can of WD-40, a shoehorn, and the muscle power of two burly Teamsters — but I squeezed myself into a 2004 Versace dress for the Fourth Estate Award Gala last week.

MrB and I went to the event in Washington, D.C., because our friend Amanda Bennett<\/a> was being honored for her illustrious career in journalism. Read Amanda’s bio<\/a> and weep, because few of us will achieve half of what she’s done. Seriously, I’m demoralized. But at least I got into the dress, right?<\/p>\n

We had an adventure on the way to D.C. We missed our train by mere minutes and all the other D.C. trains were fully booked, but an alert Amtrak ticket agent realized there was a sleeper train going to New Orleans that stopped in Washington, and it was leaving right at that moment. So not only did we get on a train, but we had our own little room and an attentive steward who totally sold me on one day taking the train all the way to the Big Easy.
