But earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2018\/12\/michelle-obama-balenciaga-boots.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Obama came to slayyyyyyyyy in thigh-high, glittery Balenciaga boots and my eyes nearly fell out of my head<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center><a id='xJ7YVNV9Qxl_Lcg7cYLLCg' class='gie-single' href='http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1084779006' target='_blank' style='color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;'>Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'xJ7YVNV9Qxl_Lcg7cYLLCg',sig:'G6yaWjM2w8c6V8XLHtcBsLOBPaUWrcuAHgAxDs1NIBc=',w:'594px',h:'594px',items:'1084779006',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Obama was actually my second-best slay of the year, because as admired as she is by people with brains, she&#8217;s a former First Lady. My top choice for Fashion Slay of 2018 goes to a woman currently in a position of power &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/dec\/30\/nancy-pelosi-trumps-easy-ride-ends-with-democrat-speaker-house\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">badass Nancy Pelosi<\/a>, the Speaker-Elect of the newly Democratic House, 11 years after she previously served as the first woman Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi was so ON during the insane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/12\/11\/18136261\/trump-schumer-pelosi-border-wall-shutdown\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">December 12 televised meeting with Trump &#8212; during which she got the alleged president to publicly claim his responsibility for the government shutdown<\/a> &#8212; that she actually made my own often-disappointing senator, Minority Leader Charles Schumer, look like he had some spine. I guess she sprinkled some toughness on him, like glitter. Then she strutted out of that meeting in a fabulous AND slow-fashion (2013!) rust-colored Max Mara coat, accessorized with sunglasses and a smirk. Did I mention she&#8217;s 78? What a fucking icon. Naturally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elitedaily.com\/p\/these-memes-of-nancy-pelosi-leaving-her-white-house-meeting-with-trump-are-pure-fire-15513415\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she was immediately meme&#8217;d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nancy Pelosi leaving the White House after the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TrumpShutDown?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TrumpShutDown<\/a> talks. \ud83d\udc4f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tYGxdHNGj8\">pic.twitter.com\/tYGxdHNGj8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; LeoKapakos (@LeoKapakosNY) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeoKapakosNY\/status\/1072674323012431873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 12, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instyle.com\/news\/nancy-pelosi-max-mara-coat-available-2019\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More surprisingly, the same day of the meeting, Max Mara announced it would re-release the coat style in 2019<\/a>. Political power AND fashion power.<\/p>\n<p>As for the worst fashion nays, the obvious rock-bottom was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/6\/21\/17489632\/melania-trump-jacket-zara-i-really-dont-care-do-u\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melania Trump&#8217;s terrible Zara coat<\/a>. Take a note: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/with-age-comes-wisdom-and-idgaf-style\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">An IDGAF fashion statement<\/a> is meant to be directed at people who are trying to keep YOU down, not at people who ARE down thanks to your own machinations. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/style\/prada-accused-racism-blackface-over-pradamalia-figurines-t145256\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prada&#8217;s horrendous (and quickly recalled) blackface figurines<\/a> were a close second. This isn&#8217;t a first strike for the brand. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/prada-my-design-process-and-runway-bravery\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 2013<\/a>, I was aggravated when Miuccia Prada claimed that she didn&#8217;t have the courage to put an older woman on her runway; she also, apparently, didn&#8217;t have the courage to use a black model in ads for a whopping 19 years. So there was really no wiggle room there. I have a lot of Prada pieces and the brand is hugely damaged for me personally. I&#8217;m not sure if it&#8217;s at the level of brand damage that Dolce &#038; Gabbana has been racking up since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/what-wendy-wore-striped-wedges-by-uh-oh\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2015<\/a> &#8212; this year the designers offended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/asian-america\/dolce-gabbana-fiasco-shows-importance-risks-china-market-n940706\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ALL OF CHINA<\/a> &#8212; but I feel a lot less love for what I already own, which doesn&#8217;t bode well for future purchases.<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s not end the 2018 blog posts on a down note. Let&#8217;s resolve to strut into the New Year like Nancy Pelosi with a Hamilton soundtrack.
