One of those is the need for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snopes.com\/medical\/myths\/8glasses.asp\" target=\"_blank\">eight glasses of water a day.<\/a> Not true. I used to believe the closet-cleaning rules. You know the ones:\u00a0 &#8220;If you haven&#8217;t worn it in a year, you must donate it to charity!&#8221; &#8220;Clean out your closet every six months!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those are reasonable suggestions for a lot of people, including those who have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>run out of closet space;<\/li>\n<li>changed sizes drastically;<\/li>\n<li>moved from the city to a farm or vice versa;<\/li>\n<li>bought quantity over quality;<\/li>\n<li>suffered from bad taste;<\/li>\n<li>grown to hate something;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aetv.com\/hoarders\/\" target=\"_blank\">displayed an alarming hoarding habit<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>been unable to wash someone else&#8217;s blood out of a favorite t-shirt and need to get rid of it before<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbs.com\/primetime\/csi\/\" target=\"_blank\"> CSI <\/a>comes back with a warrant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not on that list? People who bought beautifully made and still-flattering (key qualifier!) clothes that have the misfortune of being &#8220;last season&#8221; &#8212; that no-woman&#8217;s land between &#8220;new&#8221; and &#8220;vintage.&#8221; I never think &#8220;last season.&#8221; I think &#8220;future vintage.&#8221; My home-grown vintage collection includes <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/why-does-buyers-guilt-focus-on-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\">these crazy boots<\/a>.\u00a0 Thankfully, it also includes the ruffled Byron Lars baseball vest that I got at a sample sale in the early 1990s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4189\" style=\"width: 406px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_2010edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4189\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4189 \" title=\"IMG_2010edit\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_2010edit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_2010edit.jpg 566w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_2010edit-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4189\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My baseball vest by Byron Lars<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Byron was one of <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/hes-ba-ck-again\/\" target=\"_blank\">those talented New York designers of the&#8217;90s<\/a> whose namesake businesses didn&#8217;t survive the decade. As I cleaned out my closet over time (goodbye, Ann Taylor suits! I loved you but it&#8217;s over between us), I couldn&#8217;t part with the vest. I didn&#8217;t wear it for a year. In fact, I didn&#8217;t wear it for 12 years! I felt guilty for breaking the closet-cleaning rules but I was sure the vest would be very important to me some day. Zipper-trimmed leather ruffles from a designer&#8217;s most famous collection? Come on! The only reason I haven&#8217;t gotten it is because I&#8217;m holding out for the long-sleeved baseball jacket.
