Ever wanted to work in the jewelry biz? Whether you want to start a new career the way I did, or you’re hoping to steer your current jewelry job in a new direction, you’re welcome to come to the Gemological Institute of America<\/a> Career Fair tomorrow at New York City’s Javits Center. The event starts at 10 a.m., and it is free and open to the public; you just have to register here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

GIA says 40 gem and jewelry companies will be there, looking for new hires. As a bonus, I’ll be part of the opening panel,\u00a0 \u201cJob Success in Today\u2019s Market.\u201d My co-panelists will be Joel Schechter, executive vice president at Richline; Fallon Bock, a recent GIA<\/span> graduate working as a diamond quality specialist for Leo Schachter Diamond Group; and Greg Kwiat, chief executive officer for Kwiat & Fred Leighton.<\/p>\n

It’s a little-known fact, but I took GIA’s famous diamond grading course<\/a> early in my jewelry career! I had already made the move from journalist to investment-bank vice president to jewelry designer on my own<\/a>, but I wanted to feel more confident about diamonds.
