{"id":38900,"date":"2018-01-28T23:54:45","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T04:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/?p=38900"},"modified":"2018-01-29T02:40:38","modified_gmt":"2018-01-29T07:40:38","slug":"best-performance-at-the-2018-grammys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/best-performance-at-the-2018-grammys\/","title":{"rendered":"Best Performance at the 2018 Grammys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There were quite a few great performances at the 2018 Grammys but seeing 68-year-old Patti LuPone sing &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_uIvWcDRkSs\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Don&#8217;t Cry for Me Argentina<\/a>&#8221; from <em>Evita<\/em> 37 years after her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YGD-UZH10Dw\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first Grammys performance of that Broadway showstopper<\/a>  &#8230; well, that took my breath away! Thanks for forgiving <a href=\"http:\/\/dlisted.com\/2018\/01\/26\/patti-lupone-and-andrew-lloyd-webber-bury-the-hatchet-world-peace-is-possible\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">composer Andrew Lloyd Webber<\/a> long enough to bless us with your presence, Patti!<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/26DNheQtyhQb1yWkw\" width=\"480\" height=\"268\" frameBorder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/recordingacademy-grammys-grammy-awards-26DNheQtyhQb1yWkw\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been crazy for Patti since 1980, when my parents took me and my sister to see <em>Evita<\/em> &#8212; even though my mother was worried that we might pick up on the fact that the character was portrayed as a [MOM&#8217;S STAGE WHISPER] &#8220;W-H-O-R-E.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/nH81I8CA1rarm\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameBorder=\"0\" class=\"giphy-embed\" allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/patti-lupone-nH81I8CA1rarm\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The vinyl Broadway cast recording was played in our house so often that when I saw a London revival of <em>Evita<\/em> in 2007, I was annoyed that two lines had been changed. Not two lines in a song &#8212; two lines in the entire musical! I was still upset about it in 2008 when I devoted a blog post to Patti&#8217;s greatness.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/patti-lupone-post-from-jan-26\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CLICK HERE FOR MY 2008 PATTI LUPONE POST<\/a>.<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Patti confers her greatness upon everything she touches. Her 2005 guest-starring role on <em>Will and Grace<\/em> resulted in this iconic dialogue from Jack:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Shut up, Patti LuPone! Shut your brassy, magnificent trap! I don&#8217;t wanna hear you sing. I don&#8217;t wanna cut your hair. And I certainly don&#8217;t wanna hear you singing while I&#8217;m cutting your hair! Got it?!
