When it comes to show-biz style, musicians don&#8217;t play it safe the way actors do. Even when you bring a musician to the Academy Awards &#8212; the No. 1 event for luxurious, boring fashion &#8212; you can&#8217;t necessarily get her to conform. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/la-et-mn-oscars-awkward-moments-photos-005-photo.html\" target=\"_blank\">Remember Bjork dropping a big egg out of her swan dress on the Oscars red carpet in 2001<\/a>? It&#8217;s not that I deduct points if you look pretty, but &#8220;interesting&#8221; is more important to me than &#8220;attractive.&#8221; I give extra credit to anyone who is outright controversial. That made the Best Dressed\/Wear What You Want winner of yesterday&#8217;s Grammys obvious.<\/p>\n<p>My first runner-up is Lady Gaga, who bounced back from her <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/lady-gagas-super-bowl-show-reminds-me-of-someone\/\" target=\"_blank\">relatively conservative Super Bowl look<\/a> of a week ago with a black-leather ensemble that reminded me in a good way of the shock value of <em>The Fame<\/em>-era Gaga. I haven&#8217;t been enthusiastic about Cee Lo since I saw him at <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/we-survived-eminem-at-lollapalooza\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lollapalooza in 2011<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2014\/sep\/02\/cee-lo-green-it-isnt-if-the-victim-is-unconscious\" target=\"_blank\">He&#8217;s gotten even less appealing in recent years<\/a>. But I must concede that his Grammys look left me speechless, which is pretty hard to do with fashion. (Also, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2mkTPgZZXnU\" target=\"_blank\">Fuck You<\/a>&#8221; is a breakup\/revenge song for the ages.)<\/p>\n<p>Green was an instant meme, of course. My favorites have him photoshopped into pictures of Trump and his family in their tacky golden apartment. Note to Trump: You should realize that you have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=shiteous\" target=\"_blank\">shiteous<\/a> taste when Cee Lo Green dressed at C-3PO blends right into your decor. <\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I edited Ceelo Green into the background of pics of Trump in his apartment and holy shit ??? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VurY7DMJ1w\">pic.twitter.com\/VurY7DMJ1w<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jesse McLaren (@McJesse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McJesse\/status\/830944225646804995\">February 13, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center><\/p>\n<p>An honorable mention goes to Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun of 21 Pilots for accepting their Grammy for pop duo\/group performance in their underwear. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/la-et-grammys-live-updates-why-did-21-pilots-take-off-their-pants-1486950498-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\">As they explained while they were on stage<\/a>, some years ago they were watching the Grammys in their underwear and Josh said to Tyler that if they ever won a Grammy, they should stick to the dress code. A tip of the hat to them for going through with it (and telling the story in a charming way).<\/p>\n<p>Another honorable mention goes to Rihanna. She can carry off a fluffy, puffy look like no one else, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/828805\/rihanna-is-fashionably-late-to-2017-grammys-red-carpet-and-wears-daring-orange-and-black-outfit\" target=\"_blank\">her black Armani Prive ballgown skirt <\/a>brought back pleasant memories of her <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/my-best-dressed-at-the-grammys-sia-and-her-child-minion\/\" target=\"_blank\">giant, pink Giambattista Valli gown of 2015<\/a>.
