In the 1990s, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson became &#8220;It&#8221; after being photographed embracing Prince Charles during a skiing trip in Switzerland. (Her father, also named Charles, was a former Olympic skier who taught the prince to ski in the 1970s. Her almost boyishly thin frame reminded me of the <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/kenneth-jay-lane-made-me-do-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">1960s American It Girl Edie Sedgwick<\/a>, and like Edie, she made bold fashion choices, the most notorious of which was the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honey_Rider\" target=\"_blank\">Bond Girl<\/a>-worthy white bikini she wore to her 27th birthday party. &#8220;T P-T,&#8221; as her name was sometimes abbreviated, fabulously accessorized her two-piece with tall boots, a fur coat, and a snorkel and mask. The drug destroyed her septum, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/lostinshowbiz\/2011\/apr\/28\/tara-palmer-tomkinson-royal-wedding\" target=\"_blank\">her collapsed nose required several reconstructions, the first done in 2006<\/a>. More recently, she  said she&#8217;d been diagnosed with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/feb\/08\/tara-palmer-tomkinson-a-life-of-privilege-parties-and-paparazzi\" target=\"_blank\">a non-malignant pituitary-gland tumor<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/tara-palmer-tomkinsons-emotional-last-9781291\" target=\"_blank\">an autoimmune disease<\/a>. I won&#8217;t be surprised if it takes a while for the cause of death to be determined.<\/p>\n<p>The facts above make T P-T sound like nothing but a pretty girl turned train wreck, but Palmer-Tomkinson actually had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/women\/life\/tara-palmer-tomkinsons-14-best-quotes-men-money-girl\/tara-part-prince-charless-skiing-party-1999\/\" target=\"_blank\">a lot of personality<\/a>, which was <a href=\"http:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/02\/08\/from-the-jeremy-kyle-show-to-im-a-celebrity-tara-palmer-tomkinsons-eclectic-tv-appearances-6436015\/\" target=\"_blank\">displayed on a number of reality-television shows in the 2000s<\/a>. In 2007, right before she won the charity-fundraising show <em>Comic Relief Fame Academy<\/em>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/organgrinder\/2007\/mar\/15\/comicreliefdoesfameacademy2\" target=\"_blank\">critic for the Guardian<\/a> wrote that Tara couldn&#8217;t sing but:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;From the moment she arrived and declared herself mad as a box of frogs, she has been at the very least a good value booking. But when she sang Jolene? Or Rainy Days and Mondays? &#8230; nothing could be more poignant than Tara emoting her way through Karen Carpenter. It works on many *many* levels.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her most memorable moment on that show was when she belted out &#8220;These Boots Are Made for Walking.&#8221; You get a sense of her charisma here. She sure knew how to work a cut-out black dress and high boots, too!<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MAShwOIyMRg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>RIP, T P-T. You were always fascinating!<\/p>\n<p>UPDATED FEB. 16, 2016, TO ADD: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/02\/15\/tara-palmer-tomkinson-died-natural-causes-perforated-ulcer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Palmer-Tomkinson&#8217;s family has announced that she died in her sleep of a perforated ulcer and peritonitis. They said she did not have a brain tumor<\/a>. Her sister also tweeted that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SantaMontefiore\/status\/831859558121406464\" target=\"_blank\">Tara wasn&#8217;t Prince Charles&#8217;s goddaughter, as has been frequently reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In case you missed it, here&#8217;s what was on the blog this week.
