There are so<\/em> many social-media-friendly “holidays<\/a>” to celebrate. Some of them have been officially designated to promote companies (National Pancake Day<\/a>) or industries (National Ice Cream Day<\/a>), while others promote causes (National Family Literacy Day<\/a>). Our feline overlords have multiple tributes: National Cat Day<\/a>, International Cat Day<\/a>, National Black Cat Day<\/a>, National Feral Cat Day<\/a>, and National Hug Your Cat Day<\/a> (Warning: Observing the latter holiday can be physically dangerous.)<\/p>\n

Today’s special day is Giving Tuesday (#GivingTuesday<\/a> on Twitter), which was created in 2012 by the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City’s 92nd Street Y<\/a>. It’s intended to be a philanthropic antidote to the shopping sprees of the Black Friday<\/a> and Cyber Monday sales<\/a>.
