Two years ago<\/a>, when I saw my celebrity crush Neil Young<\/a> perform solo at Carnegie Hall, I thought, “This is the way to see Neil. Without the distraction of a band.” On Saturday, when I saw Neil Young perform on the second day of \u201cOldchella<\/a>\u201d — aka the Desert Trip music festival, in Indio, Calif. —\u00a0 I thought, “This is the way to see Neil Young. With the energy of a band behind him.” In other words, there is no wrong way to see Neil Young in concert.<\/p>\n

These days, Neil is performing with Promise of the Real<\/a>, a band that includes two of Willie Nelson’s sons<\/a>. They did some major jamming, including a version of “Down by the River” that ran more than 20 minutes. With extended versions of so many songs, Neil wound up with only 40 seconds left for his last song. After declaring that he would do a 40-second version of “Rockin’ in the Free World,” Neil and the band played for another eight minutes (including two false endings).<\/p>\n
