You can always count on this event to produce memorable moments, even in worst years. And this shouldn&#8217;t be a bad year. As the New York Times reported, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/08\/26\/arts\/music\/mtv-vmas-beyonce-drake-kanye-west.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">music videos matter again<\/a>! That&#8217;s due to YouTube rather than television, of course, but who cares, as long as we&#8217;re getting great work like Beyonce&#8217;s visual album <a href=\"https:\/\/listen.tidal.com\/album\/59727856\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Lemonade<\/em><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the show, here are my previous blog posts inspired by the VMAs, dating back to 2007.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sept. 9, 2007:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/save-britney-spears\/\" target=\"_blank\">Britney Spears had a rough time at the 2007 VMAs<\/a>. She&#8217;s going to be back &#8212; and hopefully much better &#8212; this year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sept. 12, 2007:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/if-messed-up-britney-makes-you-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\">People were really nasty to Britney about that performance<\/a>, so I had to write another post to tell &#8217;em to leave Britney aloooooooooone.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/toofab.com\/2016\/08\/26\/chris-crocker-leave-britney-alone-now\/\" target=\"_blank\">Unfortunately, I didn&#8217;t do that as memorably as a fan named Chris Crocker did<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sept. 24, 2007:<\/strong> While the VMAs were on my mind, I flashed back to <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/its-like-climbing-mt-everest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Triumph the Insult Comic Dog confronting Jennifer Lopez about the size of her ass in 2001<\/a>. If only Triumph the puppet had know the Kardashians were coming! He wouldn&#8217;t have been so impressed with J. Lo. By the way, Triumph and his comic puppeteer Robert Smigel are still around. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv\/features\/triumph-the-insult-comic-dog-how-to-poop-on-trump-politics-w436126\" target=\"_blank\">He\/they did an interview with Rolling Stone that mentions Triumph&#8217;s notorious confrontation with Eminem at the 2002 awards<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oct. 5, 2010:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/fashion-repeats-itself-trashy-couture-30-years-apart\/\" target=\"_blank\">I suddenly realized that Kesha&#8217;s garbage-bag VMAs dress wasn&#8217;t a first<\/a>. Debbie Harry of Blondie wore a garbage bag in 1980&#8217;s &#8220;Atomic&#8221; video.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feb. 13, 2011:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/crossing-my-fingers-for-eminem-lady-gaga-at-grammys\/\" target=\"_blank\">Did I ever tell you I was at the VMAs in person in 2000 when Eminem did his iconic performance with a crowd of Slim Shady clones?<\/a> This might be the first of my million mentions of that fact.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug. 28, 2011:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/flashback-to-my-2003-mtv-vma-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\">A flashback to 2003, when I also went to the VMAs. I still have the souvenir Moonman. And the dress!<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug. 29, 2011:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/musical-men-in-red-pants-at-the-vmas\/\" target=\"_blank\">This was the year of men in red pants at the VMAs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nov. 21, 2011:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/what-wendy-wore-kid-rock-at-the-beacon-theatre\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Kid Rock concert reminded me of being at the VMAs in person in 1999<\/a>. That was a fucking awesome show. I listed the iconic moments in this post.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sept. 7, 2012:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/mtv-vma-fashion-short-hair-dont-care\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pink, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna all rocked short hair at the 2012 VMAs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug. 25, 2013:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/mtv-vma-flashback-gifts-from-2002-and-2003\/\" target=\"_blank\">I dug up my souvenir from the 2002 VMAs<\/a>.\u00a0 I wonder if I can find an outfit photo? Believe it or not, there was once a time where we didn&#8217;t take outfit photos every day. Sometimes not even for a big event! But I should look around and see what I can find.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug. 27, 2013:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/the-unofficial-twitter-policy-and-miley-cyrus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oh, this was Miley Cyrus&#8217;s year! <\/a>We were talking about her for weeks!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sept. 4, 2013:<\/strong> Things got so nuts about Miley that I did a Huffington Post story on the psychological reasons why we&#8217;re shocked &#8212; SHOCKED! &#8212; by certain behavior at first and then come to view it as iconic. <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/i-had-to-call-a-psychologist-and-its-miley-cyruss-fault\/\" target=\"_blank\">I had more great content than I could fit in the Huffington Post piece so I put some of it on my blog<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/wendy-brandes\/fading-affect-bias_b_3857096.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>*HERE&#8217;S MY 2013 HUFFINGTON POST STORY ON FADING AFFECT BIAS*<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oct. 3, 2013:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/throwback-thursday-gladiators-plus-more-miley-madonna\/\" target=\"_blank\">The revisionist history of Miley&#8217;s performance with Robin Thicke had already started by now, just as I predicted<\/a>. And it continued. Does ANYONE care about Robin Thicke now? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/753860\/why-miley-cyrus-might-actually-be-one-of-the-best-voice-coaches-yet\" target=\"_blank\">Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus is a coach on <em>The Voice<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jan. 9, 2014:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/throwback-thursday-neil-young-and-me-in-1989\/\" target=\"_blank\">How a Neil Young got censored by MTV in 1988 for badmouthing commercialism, and later won &#8220;Best Video of the Year&#8221; at the 1989 VMAs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>April 7, 2014:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/04\/from-gloria-steinem-to-miley-cyrus-in-one-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">I annoyed Gloria Steinem and then ran off to a Miley Cyrus concert.<\/a> The concert was planned. I didn&#8217;t do it in reaction to annoying Gloria, but I thought the juxtaposition was amusing. I wanted to see Miley because she was so hot from the previous year&#8217;s 2013 VMAs &#8220;scandal.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oct. 26, 2014:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/miley-cyrus-earrings-and-the-week-in-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Still doing my &#8220;I told you so&#8221; victory dance over Miley&#8217;s 2013 VMAs performance<\/a>. The New York Times took notice of how Robin Thicke&#8217;s career had collapsed while Miley was going strong.<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 23, 2015:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/musical-interlude-taylor-swift-nicki-minaj-and-miley-cyrus\/\" target=\"_blank\">When the 2015 VMA nominations came out, Taylor Swift had a lot of them and Nicki Minaj did not<\/a>.\u00a0 Nicki had something to say about that and Taylor got all in her white-privilege feelings about that. Also, I took Swift-superfan MrB to a Taylor Swift concert. Never again.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug. 30, 2015:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/miley-cyrus-hosts-the-mtv-vmas\/\" target=\"_blank\">A whole bunch of VMA invitations that I saved<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug. 31, 2015:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/my-best-dressed-at-the-2015-mtv-vmas-is\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oh damn! Nicki vs. Miley. &#8220;MILEY, WHAT&#8217;S GOOD?&#8221; Definitely the highlight of the 2015 VMAs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a pre-VMA flashback photo scheduled for before the show and I&#8217;ll do a Best Dressed\/Wear What You Want post during or after the show.
