And that made it a challenge to determine the most worthy recipient of my coveted <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/category\/best-dressed-wear-what-you-want-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">Best Dressed\/Wear What You Want combo award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/listings\/2016\/manus-x-machina\" target=\"_blank\">Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology<\/a>,&#8221; was a good excuse to dress like a silvery robot, which is a look I normally like a lot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32725\" style=\"width: 508px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunss.com\/shop\/vintage-inspired-elegant-evening-formal-dresses-59.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32725\" class=\"wp-image-32725 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/gaga1_1024.jpg\" alt=\"Vintage Inspired Elegant Evening Formal Dresses\" width=\"498\" height=\"879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/gaga1_1024.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/gaga1_1024-170x300.jpg 170w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/gaga1_1024-300x530.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I wore head-to-toe silver to a Lady Gaga concert in 2010. Click for original post.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2016\/05\/02\/met-gala-silver\/#VIMtNtlbauq3\" target=\"_blank\">But so many attendees were inspired to go with that style<\/a> that no individual stood out to me. Who knew that robot-style could get old? Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Then Karolina Kurkova&#8217;s light-up Marchesa dress and Claire Danes&#8217;s light-up Zac Posen dress seemed to save the day. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/marchesa-ibm-watson-to-debut-cognitive-dress-at-mondays-met-gala\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marchesa&#8217;s designers worked with IBM&#8217;s supercomputer, Watson, to create a very Marchesa-looking dress<\/a> embedded with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-emitting_diode\" target=\"_blank\">LEDs<\/a> that changed color depending on the tone of Twitter comments about the gala. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/2016\/05\/109768\/karolina-kurkova-ibm-watson-marchesa-dress-met-gala-2016\" target=\"_blank\">Watson was in charge of analyzing the tone of the tweets<\/a>. It&#8217;s a bit &#8220;corporate sponsorship&#8221;-sounding once you get IBM involved, but I loved it, including the fact that Karolina couldn&#8217;t sit down on the way to the event. It&#8217;s probably the one event where it&#8217;s a bonus if you wear a gown that prevents normal movement. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Little_Red_Riding_Hood\" target=\"_blank\">The better to view you as a museum exhibit, my dear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Danes&#8217;s icy blue, Posen-designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=cinderella&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8#q=cinderella+gown\" target=\"_blank\">Cinderella gown<\/a> didn&#8217;t look groundbreaking in broad daylight, but in the dark, the fiber-optic-woven organza glowed. Click for my original post.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While examining CuteCircuit&#8217;s website, I realized the company had done <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmag.com\/cutecircuit-twitter-dress\/24897\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Twitter dress as well, back in 2012<\/a>. (That dress had actual, readable tweets, too, not just mood lighting.) I couldn&#8217;t drag myself away from CuteCircuit&#8217;s website. Click for my original post.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also,<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/K3n_5s\/status\/727291519007256576\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter user Ken Nichols<\/a> pointed out that <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/apps\/pubs\/default.aspx?id=149519\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Research did a Twitter dress of sorts in 2011<\/a>, a year before CuteCircuit, though I don&#8217;t believe that paper design, which involved projection, was wearable.<\/p>\n<p>After pondering all of this information, I decided that Karolina and Claire were beautifully, perfectly dressed for the theme by inventive designers. But the catch is that my award is the Best Dressed\/Wear What You Want <em>combo<\/em> award. To be eligible, you can\u2019t merely look beautiful because that&#8217;s too damn easy! You must dare to be different. She worked her hair, makeup and accessories into the look seamlessly. I appreciate that she didn&#8217;t undercut the dress with traditionally &#8220;pretty&#8221; styling choices. Her sleek, black beehive hairdo and short, blunt bangs struck me as retro-modern. It was the perfect marriage of technology and the hand of man.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Being willing to stick out like a sore, non-robot thumb meant SJP would have really given Katy a run for her money in my mind if her beauty choices and accessories made more of a statement.
