That&#8217;s too easy! You must dare to be different, and Sandy definitely did that. I was especially appreciative because <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/best-dressed-at-the-grammys-plus-other-musical-fashions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lady Gaga hit the Grammys red carpet with a fabulous orange-haired Bowie look<\/a>, but then changed to much less successful costume for her onstage Bowie tribute performance.  Sandy kept her look all night. <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/what-wendy-wore-the-2016-vanity-fair-oscar-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">As I mentioned in this post<\/a>, I saw her at the Vanity Fair party, where I told her that <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2016\/02\/that-was-sandy-powell-not-tilda-swinton.html\" target=\"_blank\">E! television commentators had misidentified her as actress Tilda Swinton<\/a>. Click to see on my Instagram.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When I first found out &#8212; thanks to Twitter &#8212; that &#8220;Tilda&#8221; the actress was really Sandy the costume designer, I mentally misidentified her myself, thinking excitedly, &#8220;Wait, is that the American Express costume designer?!&#8221; Nope! The woman who wore a dress made out of 254 gold American Express cards in 1995 was costume designer Lizzy Gardiner, who won for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Adventures_of_Priscilla,_Queen_of_the_Desert\" target=\"_blank\">The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert<\/a><\/em>.  Gardiner had wanted to use the idea in the movie, but American Express wouldn&#8217;t go along with it. <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=e9zTIVIDyMMC&#038;pg=PA70&#038;lpg=PA70&#038;dq=I%27m+broke,+and+I+didn%27t+have+anything+to+wear.+So+I+went+through+my+list+of+past+good+ideas.&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=mKaQJ5OdOq&#038;sig=S62D5rJQ_PCh7GQv4xH5vEXloW8&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=0ahUKEwiH8YHXtqPLAhVqmYMKHcI7CHMQ6AEIIzAB#v=onepage&#038;q=I%27m%20broke%2C%20and%20I%20didn%27t%20have%20anything%20to%20wear.%20So%20I%20went%20through%20my%20list%20of%20past%20good%20ideas.&#038;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">When she was nominated for an Academy Award, she said<\/a>, she went through her list of past ideas. Seriously, check out that list. Nearly all the &#8220;best&#8221; dresses are completely unmemorable, while the &#8220;worst&#8221; ones are iconic. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/store\/products.php?product=SMH-Rings\" target=\"_blank\">SMH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Powell wasn&#8217;t the only costume designer making a big &#8220;Wear What You Want&#8221; statement. Two weeks before the Oscars, Beavan won at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bafta.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">BAFTAs<\/a> while wearing a similar look. (BAFTAs presenter, comedian Stephen Fry, got slammed for joking that Beavan was dressed like a bag lady. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/people\/stephen-fry-bafta-joke-award-winner-jenny-beavan-absolutely-not-upset-over-bag-lady-joke-a6876141.html\" target=\"_blank\">Beavan said she and Fry are friends and that she wasn&#8217;t upset<\/a>.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=V7Xcyr8DYzY\" target=\"_blank\">And in 1987<\/a>, when she won her first Oscar for <em>A Room With a View<\/em>, Beavan accepted while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-3471236\/Bag-lady-Jenny-Beavan-ripping-red-carpet-dress-code-Eighties.html\" target=\"_blank\">wearing a jacket, big shirt, bow tie and scarf<\/a>. Beavan called this year&#8217;s outfit an homage to <em>Mad Max<\/em>, saying, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2016\/02\/29\/no_oscar_gown_no_high_heels_no_problem_mad_max_costume_designer_jenny_beavan_is_the_real_red_carpet_mvp\/\" target=\"_blank\">I don\u2019t do frocks and absolutely don\u2019t do heels, I have a bad back. I look ridiculous in a beautiful gown.<\/a>&#8221; How can you be a costume designer if you don&#8217;t like dressing up? Easily. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2016\/02\/29\/no_oscar_gown_no_high_heels_no_problem_mad_max_costume_designer_jenny_beavan_is_the_real_red_carpet_mvp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Salon says<\/a> Beavan has explained herself this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;I have no interest in my own clothes or in clothes in general. My love is creating character through clothes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beavan and <em>Mad Max<\/em> richly deserved this year&#8217;s costume-design award.
