Click for original post.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of my favorite real <em>Golden Girls<\/em> moments was from the anti-domestic-violence episode, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvland.com\/episodes\/zduwm3\/the-golden-girls-the-bloom-is-off-the-rose-ep-613\" target=\"_blank\">The Bloom Is Off the Rose<\/a>.&#8221; Dorothy is surprised to see Blanche doing laundry for what turns out to be a very bad boyfriend, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk\/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=the-golden-girls-1985&#038;episode=s06e13\" target=\"_blank\">Blanche replies<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Dorothy, I&#8217;ve done the laundry thousands of times. Oh, by the way, we&#8217;re out of BLEE-ACHKK.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Golden Girls had a lot of episodes related to social issues: <a href=\"http:\/\/goldengirls.wikia.com\/wiki\/Job_Hunting\" target=\"_blank\">ageism<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/07\/22\/333759394\/what-the-golden-girls-taught-us-about-aids\" target=\"_blank\">AIDS<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/goldengirls.wikia.com\/wiki\/Clayton_%22Clay%22_Louis_Hollingsworth\" target=\"_blank\">gays<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/goldengirls.wikia.com\/wiki\/Isn't_It_Romantic\" target=\"_blank\">lesbians<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/goldengirls.wikia.com\/wiki\/Ebbtide's_Revenge\" target=\"_blank\">cross-dressing<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvland.com\/episodes\/9t4hn1\/the-golden-girls-the-accurate-conception-ep-503\" target=\"_blank\">artificial insemination<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/goldengirls.wikia.com\/wiki\/Viola_Watkins\" target=\"_blank\">interracial<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0589782\/\" target=\"_blank\">relationships<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/shows\/the-golden-girls\/letter-to-gorbachev-4540\/\" target=\"_blank\">nuclear war fears<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/shows\/the-golden-girls\/feelings-5392\/\" target=\"_blank\">sexual assault<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0589712\/\" target=\"_blank\">infidelity<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=DJZdteZ2H1oC&#038;pg=PA104&#038;lpg=PA104&#038;dq=golden+girls+anti-semitism&#038;source=bl&#038;ots=nhS5lEBlM7&#038;sig=AeZEddKs03jXXtQR6kURJaOJiog&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=0CC0Q6AEwAmoVChMIx-X1ho_3xwIVCjs-Ch13qAfT#v=onepage&#038;q=golden%20girls%20anti-semitism&#038;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"> anti-Semitism<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.com\/shows\/the-golden-girls\/high-anxiety-4618\/\" target=\"_blank\">addiction<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvland.com\/episodes\/l3x5ag\/the-golden-girls-brother--can-you-spare-that-jacket--ep-408\" target=\"_blank\">homelessness<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/goldengirls.wikia.com\/wiki\/Old_Friends\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvland.com\/episodes\/0uptht\/the-golden-girls-mrs--george-devereaux-ep-609\" target=\"_blank\">Sonny Bono<\/a> &#8230;. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2015\/09\/09\/30-years-later-golden-girls-still-most-progressive-show-television\" target=\"_blank\">the list<\/a> goes on and on. Is there any sitcom like this now? If so, I want to watch it!<\/p>\n<p>UPDATED TO ADD: What timing! In yesterday&#8217;s New York Times, there&#8217;s an article by television writer\/producer <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2013\/12\/long-strange-journey-of-nell-scovell.html\" target=\"_blank\"> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lean-In-Women-Work-Will\/dp\/0385349947\" target=\"_blank\">Lean In<\/a><\/em> co-author Nell Scovell<\/a> called &#8220;No &#8216;Golden Age&#8217; for Women on TV<\/a>,&#8221; which points out that, in 1990, three of the five shows nominated for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy were created by women. One of them was Susan Harris&#8217;s <em>The Golden Girls<\/em>. (Diane English&#8217;s <em>Murphy Brown<\/em> won.) Scovell writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Like leggings, comedies created by women came into vogue in the late 1980s, exploded in the early &#8217;90s, went mainstream in the mid-90s and were shoved into the back of the closet around 1997. It took another decade before the next show solely created by a woman &#8212; Tina Fey&#8217;s &#8217;30 Rock&#8217; &#8212; made it back into the elite Emmy inner circle. Perhaps not coincidentally, leggings made a comeback around the same time.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She goes on to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Yes, Ms. Fey&#8217;s monumental career has matched her monumental talents. But one individual&#8217;s success does not translate to an entire class. (See Obama, Barack; re: racism).&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And I really like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;There have always been women who were successful against the odds.
