On Sunday, Taylor Swift wore a white, cut-out jumpsuit to the Billboard Music Awards, and retailer Nasty Gal proudly claimed credit for it, as one does when a celebrity wears one&#8217;s designs.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color:#fff;display:inline-block;font-family:'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;color:#a7a7a7;font-size:11px;width:100%;max-width:446px;\">\n<div style=\"overflow:hidden;position:relative;height:0;padding:133.183857% 0 0 0;width:100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/473897724?et=O-r6i_IZSQpA6Q8wCXnmgw&#038;viewMoreLink=on&#038;sig=T7HOdG0feZe23IGerLhBNng9DPlu8bOPndhqhSyPipE=&#038;caption=true\" width=\"446\" height=\"594\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"display:inline-block;position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin:0;\">\n<div style=\"padding:0;margin:0 0 0 10px;text-align:left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/473897724\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\">View image<\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\">gettyimages.com<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Too bad it wasn&#8217;t a Nasty Gal piece at all, but an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.683021651801653.1073741955.209232429180580&#038;type=1\" target=\"_blank\">original Balmain design<\/a> that the Nasty Gal team had copied for its own benefit. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Fashion Law<\/a> blog, which has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fashion-law.org\/2012\/09\/nasty-gal-removes-tees-with-chanel-logo.html\" target=\"_blank\">long called out Nasty Gal for shameless copying<\/a>, spotted the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/that-time-nasty-gal-copied-balmain-passed-it-off-as-their-own\/\" target=\"_blank\">mistake<\/a>.&#8221; I literally laughed at the opening lines of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/that-time-nasty-gal-copied-balmain-passed-it-off-as-their-own\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Fashion Law&#8217;s scoop<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In a recent article, we posed the following question: at what point does all of the copying that is so rampant in fashion simply cross the line? Well, it seems we have found our answer. Copying becomes too much when the fast fashion retailer either: a) confuses its own blatant copy for the real thing, and\/or b) starts attributing the original design to its own brand.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/thank-you-to-the-peeps-at-nasty-gal\/\" target=\"_blank\">I had my own incident with Nasty Gal last year<\/a>, when it was selling a copy of my <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/making-a-long-story-longer-update-on-topshop-swear-rings\/\" target=\"_blank\">famous<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/store\/products.php?product=Swear-Rings\" target=\"_blank\">swear rings<\/a> that had been mass-produced by some factory and wholesaled to a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/thank-you-to-the-peeps-at-patricia-field\/\" target=\"_blank\">retailers<\/a>. Nasty Gal was cooperative about removing the rings from its website when I complained. I was pleasantly surprised, because the retailer had previously lived up to its name by having some truly nasty social-media fights with small designers who saw Nasty Gal&#8217;s imitations of their work. According to The Fashion Law, a wholesaler can&#8217;t be blamed for the jumpsuit situation: &#8220;Nasty Gal proclaims that the items included in its &#8216;Nasty Gal&#8217; collection are designed by its own in-house team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Fashion Law says that after Nasty Gal put its Taylor Swift claim on its Instagram account &#8212; an account that has 1.6 million followers &#8212; people &#8220;filled the photo\u2019s comment section&#8221; with the correct designer name. Nasty Gal deleted the post but not before The Fashion Law got a screen cap and only after the jumpsuit sold out. If you&#8217;re one of the people awaiting your delivery, be warned. The Fashion Law quoted one reviewer as saying, the jumpsuit \u201cwas disappointing. It looks very cheap and poorly made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Click here to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefashionlaw.com\/that-time-nasty-gal-copied-balmain-passed-it-off-as-their-own\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Fashion Law&#8217;s entire post<\/a> &#8212; and definitely follow The Fashion Law on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheFashionLaw\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> if you&#8217;re interested in these issues. <\/p>\n<p>I skipped watching the Billboard Music Awards because I was preoccupied with the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2015\/05\/mad-men-finale-id-like-to-buy-it-a-coke\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mad Men<\/a><\/em> finale, but I studied <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/657541\/best-worst-dressed-stars-at-the-2015-billboard-music-awards-see-the-pics\" target=\"_blank\">the red carpet pictures later<\/a>, prepared to bestow my coveted <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/category\/best-dressed-wear-what-you-want-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">Best Dressed\/Where What You Want combo award<\/a> upon some lucky attendee.
