{"id":28004,"date":"2014-12-03T23:57:23","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T04:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/?p=28004"},"modified":"2017-11-16T19:06:19","modified_gmt":"2017-11-17T00:06:19","slug":"what-wendy-wore-committee-to-protect-journalists-dinner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/what-wendy-wore-committee-to-protect-journalists-dinner\/","title":{"rendered":"What Wendy Wore: Committee to Protect Journalists Dinner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Committee to Protect Journalists<\/a> gave out its International Press Freedom Awards at the Waldorf Astoria last Tuesday, November 25. I wrote about CPJ&#8217;s importance in <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/what-wendy-wore-ossie-clark-at-rosewater-screening\/\" target=\"_blank\">that day&#8217;s post on the movie<\/a> <em>Rosewater<\/em>, which tells the story of Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari. When Bahari was arrested in Iran in 2009 &#8212; and held and tortured for 118 days\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0 CPJ was one of the many organizations and individuals that petitioned for his release.\u00a0 As a result, Bahari was on hand last week to present a Press Freedom award to Iranian freelance journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/awards\/2014\/siamak-ghaderi-iran.php\">Siamak Ghaderi<\/a>, who was released this July after spending four years in prison in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Other awardees were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/awards\/2014\/aung-zaw-burma.php\" target=\"_blank\">Aung Zaw of Burma<\/a>, founder and editor-in-chief of The Irrawaddy, a Burma-focused news organization that operates from exile; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/awards\/2014\/mikhail-zygar-russia.php\" target=\"_blank\">Mikhail Zygar<\/a>, the editor-in-chief of the independent Russian TV channel Dozhd, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/russian-channel-taken-off-air-accused-of-crossing.php#more\">Russian government has been trying to drive off the air<\/a>; and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/awards\/2014\/ferial-haffajee-south-africa.php\" target=\"_blank\"> Ferial Haffajee<\/a>, the editor-in-chief of the local privately owned weekly City Press in South Africa. Jorge Ramos, the Emmy-award-winning anchor of Univision News, received the Burton Benjamin Memorial Award. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/awards\/2014\/jorge-ramos.php\" target=\"_blank\">In his acceptance speech<\/a>, he argued that journalists shouldn&#8217;t be afraid to take a stand. Ramos quoted Nobel Prize winner and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.&#8221; <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Think about it. It&#8217;s the truth, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/awards\/2014\/cpj-international-press-freedom-awards-2014.php\" target=\"_blank\">The black-tie dinner raised a record total of $2.7 million<\/a>, including a special commitment from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knightfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Knight Foundation<\/a> and pledges made during dinner by attendees who were egged on by host <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christiane_Amanpour\" target=\"_blank\">Christiane Amanpour of CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I wore the same dress I wore to the CPJ dinner in 2004: my <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/i-am-not-puritan\/\" target=\"_blank\">blog-famous Sex-ay Pilgrim dress<\/a>. I got it for only $60 and the workmanship is impeccable, from the tailoring, to the pockets, to the tight sleeves that snap and zip at the wrists.<\/p>\n<p>I was so into the top hat that <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/what-wendy-wore-halloween-with-the-damned\/\" target=\"_blank\">I borrowed from my designing friend Stacy Lomman for Halloween<\/a> that I decided to accessorize the pilgrim dress that way for the CPJ dinner this year. I got that clutch in South Africa last year.<\/p><\/div><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Style photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/what-wendy-wore-plus-thoughts-on-bill-cunningham\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Cunningham of the New York Times<\/a> stopped by briefly before the event got started to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/02\/28\/fashion\/20141130-bill-cunningham-evening-hours.html?ref=fashion&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\"> take pictures of the awardees<\/a>. It&#8217;s too bad he missed my top hat; I think he would have liked it.
