My gorgeous friend Jen and I had too much fun in the second row where, to my surprise, the crowd was significantly less violent than the one for <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/we-survived-eminem-at-lollapalooza\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eminem at Lollapalooza in 2011<\/a>. When the Monster Tour started with &#8220;Numb,&#8221; I braced myself for a Lolla-like surge forward, but everyone politely stayed put &#8212; while screaming at the top of their lungs &#8212;\u00a0 where they&#8217;d been standing for a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KGvdXNiGKTg?list=UUkb-8a5XcQgPeK4U3uq6xlA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>No concert experience can compare to being <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/musical-interlude-eminem-at-g-shock-30th-anniversary-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">front row for Eminem at the small G-Shock party he played last year<\/a>, where there was practically no space between the stage and the audience. (There was a much bigger &#8220;moat&#8221; at MetLife.) Click to enlarge.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/18\/arts\/music\/eminem-and-rihanna-fuse-dark-energy-on-tour.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">A number of reviews<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/08\/17\/eminem-rihanna-rock-the-house-at-metlife\/\" target=\"_blank\">emphasized<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/entertainment\/music\/index.ssf\/2014\/08\/eminem_rihanna_thrill_metlife_with_heap_of_rap_dance-pop_mega-hits.html\" target=\"_blank\">the difference<\/a> in performing styles between Rihanna and Eminem: She seems remote, even\u00a0blas\u00e9, while he&#8217;s dripping in sweat, working his ass off.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fun to study that close up.\u00a0 I finally decided that Rihanna reminds me of eternally cool Rolling Stones drummer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifetimetv.co.uk\/biography\/biography-charlie-watts\" target=\"_blank\">Charlie Watts<\/a> &#8230; that is, if Charlie came out from behind his drums and took up twerking. For 50 years, Charlie has been chillin&#8217; like a villain on stage, often looking like he&#8217;s smiling to himself and thinking of Mick Jagger, &#8220;Look at that idjit prancing around. Rihanna is the pop diva honey badger. Let the other songstresses work their <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/in-concert-in-nyc-anya-marina-tristan-prettyman-and-pink\/\" target=\"_blank\">elaborate aerial routines<\/a> and wear their <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/what-wendy-wore-wigless-at-katy-perry\/\" target=\"_blank\">complicated, couture costumes that must be trotted out night after night<\/a>. Rihanna will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rihannaoverdose.com\/2014\/08\/the-monster-tour-fashion-recap.html\" target=\"_blank\">wear something different for each concert <\/a>to show that she just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=DGAF\" target=\"_blank\">DGAF<\/a>. When I first saw Rihanna&#8217;s new &#8216;do I had to laugh at the thought that she had swallowed up Azealia &#8212; style-wise, at least &#8212; like a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vestigial_twin\" target=\"_blank\">vestigal twin<\/a>. Better come up with a new gimmick, Azealia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2014\/jul\/11\/azealia-banks-leaves-record-deal-universal\" target=\"_blank\">wherever you are<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing Eminem doesn&#8217;t care about at all is fashion. He&#8217;s always casual. Hoodies, hats, t-shirts, shorts, sneakers. That kind of effort suits the star of the show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/entertainment\/music\/backstage-pass-1.811987\/eminem-rihanna-s-monster-metlife-show-1.9079757\" target=\"_blank\">which he definitely was<\/a>. There were some big Rihanna fans, and I&#8217;d say her hits were greeted with enthusiasm, but between her songs, the audience chanted for &#8230; Who? What? Slim Shady. (And Eminem. And Marshall.)<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_jbPVH7_JM4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>If you didn&#8217;t go to the show and only read the New York Times review &#8212; which claimed Rihanna was keeping Eminem relevant and described him as &#8220;&#8230; merely a galaxy-size cult favorite, a 41-year-old white rapper far from the center of pop culture, leaning heavily on reputation and largely failing to innovate&#8221; &#8212; you wouldn&#8217;t have a clue as to what it was like in that stadium, where I was sure 80,000 screaming people would have turned up for him even if Rihanna hadn&#8217;t been there. (Actually, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiphopdx.com\/index\/editorials\/id.2478\/title.5-takeaways-from-eminem-s-wembley-stadium-performance\" target=\"_blank\"><em>90,000<\/em><\/a> did show up, two nights in a row, for the Rap God&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/wanderlust-2014-anne-boleyn-and-eminem-in-london\/\" target=\"_blank\">solo shows at Wembley Stadium in London last month<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jkfjBOT1ATw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to criticize Em, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2013\/11\/25\/shady-and-the-lady\" target=\"_blank\">New Yorker&#8217;s review of 2013&#8217;s <em>The Marshall Mathers LP 2<\/em><\/a> makes more sense. Calling his performing persona &#8220;addicted to pain,&#8221; it asked, &#8220;But how long is Eminem going to take revenge on a world that\u2019s long since made it clear that it adores him?&#8221; For real. To go back to the Times&#8217;s &#8220;galaxy&#8221; reference, I say that when musicians revolutionize pop culture the way <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/musings-on-former-greatness-and-the-week-in-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Beatles, Madonna<\/a>, or Eminem have all done, they&#8217;re more than megastars &#8212; they&#8217;re supernovae. It&#8217;s true that in space, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supernova\" target=\"_blank\">supernovae don&#8217;t outshine galaxies forever<\/a> and, on Earth, performers don&#8217;t have the <em>exact<\/em> same fire they had for their debut 15, 30 or 50 years on. But they&#8217;re still the biggest fucking stars around! <\/p>\n<p>Having mentioned Madonna, I should note that, while I&#8217;ve now seen Eminem five times, Madonna is still <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/08\/happy-birthday-madonna-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">easily my most-seen performer<\/a>. (I believe I&#8217;ve seen her 14 times.) Nevertheless, I encourage her to go on tour to keep her lead secure.
