Size mattered!<\/p>\n<p>Some time ago, I caught a rerun of <em>Cheers<\/em> that brought back fond memories of the too-big look. <em>Cheers<\/em> is great for any kind of &#8217;80s style spotting, of course, but guest star Carol Kane&#8217;s oversized sailor top in the 1984 episode &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0539678\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Ditch in Time<\/a>&#8221; is a real classic. It&#8217;s huge!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-25325\" alt=\"carolkane1\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/carolkane11.jpg\" width=\"423\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/carolkane11.jpg 423w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/carolkane11-300x207.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even the collar is ginormous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25326\" alt=\"carolkane2\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/carolkane2.jpg\" width=\"452\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/carolkane2.jpg 452w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/carolkane2-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carol played a mental-hospital acquaintance of Diane&#8217;s who stalks bartender Sam Malone.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Kane has so many other amazing credits, and you can&#8217;t miss her distinctive, high-pitched voice whenever she&#8217;s on screen. When she appeared on <em>Cheers<\/em>, she was riding high after<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxi_%28TV_series%29#Awards\" target=\"_blank\"> winning Emmys in 1982 and 1983<\/a> for playing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3Z4iL-3KfPY\" target=\"_blank\">Simka<\/a>, the wife of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andy_Kaufman\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Kaufman<\/a>&#8216;s Latka Gravas, on the show <em>Taxi<\/em>. Previously, she&#8217;d been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for the 1975 movie <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hester_Street_%28film%29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Hester Street<\/em><\/a>. She also played Allison Portchnik, the first wife of Woody Allen&#8217;s Alvy Singer character, in 1977&#8217;s <em>Annie Hall<\/em>.\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TmpH5GNcLvA\" target=\"_blank\">No, that was wonderful! I love being reduced to a cultural stereotype<\/a>,&#8221; she says sarcastically after Alvy tries to pick her up with an unfortunate spiel that starts, &#8220;<span style=\"font-size: small;\">You&#8217;re like a New York Jewish, left-wing, liberal intellectual &#8230;&#8221; If you&#8217;re a little younger, you might remember her as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wURw1BAkK6U\" target=\"_blank\">Grandmama Addams <\/a>from 1993&#8217;s <em>Addams Family Values<\/em>. Just last year, she had a cameo on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywood.com\/recaps\/55002888\/girls-recap-its-back\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Girls<\/em><\/a>. But her most important role was as the gal with the punch line in The!Best!Movie!Scene!Ever!, which happens to appear in 1979&#8217;s <em>The Muppet Movie<\/em>. My dad and I were so thrilled by this scene and repeated it so much that I can STILL recite it from memory.\u00a0 The majority of the scene is played by three great actors: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001404\/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t15\" target=\"_blank\">Madeline Kahn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001699\/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t20\" target=\"_blank\">Telly Savalas<\/a> and Kermit the Frog. Anyway, I&#8217;m pleased to report that 30 years ago, MrB sat next to Carol Kane at a New Year&#8217;s Eve dinner &#8212; he thinks it was Dec. 31, 1984 &#8212; and found her to be very nice. I&#8217;m displeased to report that MrB neglected to shout, &#8220;Myth!
