Even when it comes to television hosts, I&#8217;m like Stewie on <em>Family Guy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LHpdgHTINik\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Dave was so different and shocking when he first got on the air. The parents kept watching Johnny Carson on <em>The Tonight Show<\/em> and the kids all switched to Letterman. People forget how revolutionary Letterman was. Because everyone has copied him, he now seems mainstream, but he was the one who changed everything. He is the TV host version of <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/category\/never-is-the-next-new-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Never Is the Next New Thing<\/a>\u2122! <\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Rolling Stone published a great story on the first year of <em>Late Night With David Letterman<\/em> on NBC, explaining how radical it was.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/news\/david-letterman-year-one-20110929\" target=\"_blank\">CLICK HERE TO READ THE ROLLING STONE ARTICLE ON LETTERMAN<\/a>.<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I still haven&#8217;t recovered from Dave&#8217;s 1983 visits to the stores Just Bulbs and Just Shades (starting at 1:49 in this clip of classic bits).<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rBLO67pBReI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Anytime I pass by <a href=\"http:\/\/justshadesny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Just Shades<\/a> on Spring Street, I get all excited. (It looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/JUST-BULBS-THE-LIGHT-BULB-STORE\/189779436737\" target=\"_blank\">Just Bulbs<\/a> is still in business too.)<\/p>\n<p>Then there was 1984&#8217;s Velcro suit.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MNfBftMWNTo\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>And it was good to learn what happens when bowling balls are dropped off a five-story tower onto a water bed.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c5spRGiakb0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Years later, Letterman showed he could be serious with his moving post-9\/11 monologue (note: the show aired on Sept. 19, 2001, before the final casualty count was known).<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DBLgp1qTCTg\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been to a taping of the Letterman show a few times. I know I went to one in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.btvguide.net\/Late-Show-with-David-Letterman\/Season-10\/episode-143\/fan-comments\" target=\"_blank\">June 2003<\/a>, when Adrien Brody was a guest. I think the one I went to in 1999 was May 19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvrage.com\/Late_Show_with_David_Letterman\/episodes\/99886\" target=\"_blank\">when Tom Selleck was a guest<\/a>, because <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/throwback-thursday-eurythmics-and-courtney-love\/\" target=\"_blank\">Courtney Love was on the following day<\/a>. I also went another time in the &#8217;90s with my gorgeous sister. I happened to be wearing my <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/what-wendy-wore-desert-pose\/\" target=\"_blank\">leopard Betsey Johnson jacket<\/a> and we both swore we saw it when the camera panned the audience during a show that taped and aired a couple of days later. Very strange! <\/p>\n<p>I hope that CBS finds someone who is NOT a white man in a suit to replace Dave. <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/seth-meyers-and-jimmy-fallon\/\" target=\"_blank\">We&#8217;re all stocked up on those<\/a>. For years, I&#8217;ve wanted to see Chelsea Handler move to one of the big networks and with her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/chelsea-handler-end-e-show-692099\" target=\"_blank\">E! show, <em>Chelsea Lately<\/em>, ending, the timing is perfect<\/a>.
