I so wish I had been included in this story because the first paragraph captures my design philosophy so well:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;To the casual observer, jewelry is all about catching the eye\u2014how a stone captures the light, or the way a certain shade of gold complements the skin. But for some jewelers, the undersides and interiors of their pieces\u2014places that are usually only noticed by the wearer\u2014merit as much attention as the exteriors.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Later in the story, Dr. Amin Jaffer, international director of Asian Art at Christie&#8217;s, says of this jewelry style, &#8220;It&#8217;s a holistic approach to jewelry as a work of art.&#8221; That&#8217;s well-put too.<\/p>\n<p>Or you could explain it more irreverently, as I did earlier this year to <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/favorite-tweets-and-the-week-in-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jennifer Heebner<\/a>, a senior editor at jewelry industry publication <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/jck-magazine-asks-wendy-brandes\/\" target=\"_blank\">JCK Magazine<\/a>, while showing her my Frog and Prince &#8220;Maneater&#8221; Ring: &#8220;It&#8217;s like a pretty girl who&#8217;s smart too!&#8221; I mean, I love a piece that looks beautiful when you give it a superficial once-over &#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19745\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/store\/products.php?product=Maneater-Ring%3A-Frog-and-Prince\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19745\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19745\" alt=\"Frog-Ring_Z1__75208_zoom\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Frog-Ring_Z1__75208_zoom.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Frog-Ring_Z1__75208_zoom.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Frog-Ring_Z1__75208_zoom-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Frog-Ring_Z1__75208_zoom-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My 18K-gold frog ring has a surprise for you.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8230; but it&#8217;s just as important to me that, when you get to know the piece, you find something deeper. This is why I call this design a &#8220;maneater&#8221; ring.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first pieces I did with a surprise inside &#8212; like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cracker_Jack\" target=\"_blank\">Cracker Jack<\/a>! &#8212; were my Juana &#8220;peekaboo&#8221; skull pieces, which I started doing in 2006. (I wrote about the inspiration for them <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/thursday-book-club-juana-la-loca\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> in 2008.) Sometimes it&#8217;s just an unexpected feeling when you try on the jewelry, as I mentioned on my About page: &#8220;Rings are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/store\/products.php?product=Nuit-Ring\" target=\"_blank\">surprisingly hefty, often incorporating more than an ounce of 18K gold<\/a> for a luxurious feeling that will spoil you for anything less &#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/get-your-bunny-earrings-in-time-for-easter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Just yesterday<\/a>, I wrote about how I wouldn&#8217;t make my tiniest stud earrings as lightweight as the manufacturer suggested, because that sensation of quality is so important to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I also like to astonish people with my extreme attention to detail. The diamonds in their horns are set in platinum. Siddharth Kasliwal remembered, &#8220;&#8216;One lady asked, &#8220;Why should I pay for the reverse when nobody sees it?&#8221; He said, &#8220;Why do you buy expensive lingerie when nobody sees that?&#8221;&#8216;&#8221; I&#8217;m not obsessed with lingerie, I admit, but I have always enjoyed the jewelry equivalent.
