My designing friend Zang Toi<\/a> had his Fall 2013 show at Lincoln Center<\/a> last Wednesday. This season, he was inspired by Imperial Russia. Opulence. Zang has it!<\/a> I was particularly attracted to the pieces in amethyst and emerald. Now that I think of it, maybe I’m looking for something to go with my Marie Antoinette earrings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zang can always be counted on for sex-ay<\/a> backless dresses<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We love to watch her go.<\/p><\/div>\n

But my personal favorite was this luscious velvet trench gown. I get a louche, ’70s vibe from it.<\/p>\n

I gave designer<\/a>\/blogger<\/a>\/stylist Stacy Lomman a wardrobe challenge for that evening. To her mild dismay, I’d bought a vintage gold lam\u00e9 hood by online late last year. She said diplomatically, “It’s very you.”<\/p>\n

When I first tried it on, we fell down laughing. It was so high at the crown that it could have been a wardrobe contender for the old Coneheads skit<\/a> on Saturday Night Live<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0I figured that Jean from Ghost Tailor <\/a>could fix the problem and she did. I told Stacy she’d have to learn to love this thing …<\/p>\n

… especially because I already had the matching sunglasses!<\/p>\n

I thought Stacy outdid herself with this outfit. It’s not the showiest result of our wardrobe-therapy project<\/a> (except the hat, of course) but it was something I could never have dreamed up. Who would think to wear a 15-year-old t-shirt dress with tights and a lam\u00e9 hat in the middle of February?<\/p>\n

\nBack in the day, I was so excited by this dress that after I bought one, I ran back to the store and bought another. It might have been from Bendel’s<\/a>. The one I’m wearing in this photo is the original length. I hemmed the second one to knee-length. I wore one of the dresses to my sister’s gospel-brunch surprise bridal shower at Sylvia’s <\/a>in June 2002.\u00a0 I can’t find a photo of me from that day, but here’s my sister, Terri Berry<\/a>, pulling up to her event with one of my co-conspirators, her then-fianc\u00e9 Tim.<\/p>\n
