It’s the Chinese New Year<\/a> today — welcome to the Year of the Snake, like it or not!\u00a0 Alas, a lot of people don’t like it very much, according to Friday’s Wall Street Journal<\/a>. The Snake is seen as less auspicious than the Year of the Dragon that just ended. And there’s another problem when it comes to luck: This is a “blind” year, which doesn’t include the first day of spring. As the Journal explains:<\/p>\n

“Because the Chinese use a lunar calendar, the first day of the new year typically falls between late January and mid-February. But spring always starts in early February\u2014this year, on Feb. 4\u2014while the Year of the Snake doesn’t begin until Feb. 10.<\/em><\/p>\n

That means the Year of the Dragon had two first days of spring\u2014one at the start and one at the end\u2014while the Year of the Snake will have none.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s also challenging to turn a snake into a cuddly children’s toy. Poor snake! I believe in turning perceived faults into assets. If you can’t be adorable, be fierce. The Journal says snakes are also known as little dragons, and that’s the image that influenced me when I did my snake jewelry designs. I’d seen a lot of snake jewelry that made the House of Slytherin’s mascot<\/a> look toothless. What are those snakes supposed to do? Gum you to death? Boring. I gave my serpents fierce fangs.
