Legend has it that the Egyptian queen Cleopatra — for whom my earrings are named — presented herself to Julius Caesar by rolling herself up in a carpet, which was then unfurled in front of Caesar. Stacy Schiff, the author of Cleopatra: A Life<\/em><\/a>, says the queen was actually in an oversize sack of hemp or leather. She had to have herself smuggled into Caesar’s quarters in her own palace, from which she had been banished by her co-regent, who happened to be her younger brother AND her husband (that’s how Egyptian royalty rolled). Egypt was in the midst of civil war. Each sibling had an army. There was also a civil war in Rome, where Julius Caesar faced off with Pompey the Great. Caesar defeated Pompey, who fled to Egypt, with Caesar chasing him. Pompey got there first and was promptly killed by the Egyptians, who hoped to appease Caesar. Unfortunately, Julius was disgusted to be presented with Pompey’s severed head when he arrived. But, while he was in the hood, he decided to meddle in the Egyptian situation. That was when Cleopatra, who wasn’t on the premises, decided she better plead her case in person. Hence the sack. The Schiff book presents Cleopatra as a savvy politician. I highly recommend it, and maybe I’ll write more about it one of these days. One thing I don’t recommend is presenting yourself in a carpet or sack to your beloved tomorrow. It’s a bit much.
