The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s front page story, headlined, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203687504576654901570712070.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\" target=\"_blank\">EU Forges Greek Bond Deal<\/a>,&#8221; explains that European leaders &#8220;had reached agreement with private banks on a &#8216;voluntary&#8217; 50% reduction of Greece&#8217;s debt in the hands of private investors.&#8221; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/27\/world\/europe\/german-vote-backs-bailout-fund-as-rifts-remain-in-talks.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The severe reduction would bring the Greek debt down by 2020 to 120 percent of that nation&#8217;s gross domestic product, a figure still enormous but more sustainable for an economy driven into recession by austerity measures.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I was reading this, a friend in Poland sent me this &#8220;ad&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13043\" title=\"greka\" src=\"http:\/\/wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/greka.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/greka.jpg 541w, https:\/\/www.wendybrandes.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/greka-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Her translation:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>&#8220;Adopt a Greek!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> You have a once in a lifetime opportunity to adopt a Greek!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Your Greek will do for you everything you don&#8217;t have the time to do:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> sleep until 11<\/em><br \/>\n<em> go out for coffee<\/em><br \/>\n<em> afternoon siesta<\/em><br \/>\n<em> sit around all evening in a restaurant<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> all of this for just 500 Euros!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> payments should be sent to European Commission.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It&#8217;s always good to be reminded that snarky political commentary is universal. Even better, I see that, according to this ad, I&#8217;m well-qualified to be a Greek because if you substitute &#8220;gym&#8221; for &#8220;coffee,&#8221; this is a good description of my ideal day.
