It was hard to see this leopard in a tree while on safari at Thornybush Game Lodge in South Africa last week.
The wild cat’s excellent camouflage made me wonder if FitzRoy the cat chose his favorite bowl for similar reasons of discretion.
If it’s good enough for cats, it’s good enough for me! When we left Thornybush for Cape Town, I got all stealthy with the hotel’s carpeting.

I had another opportunity to try camouflage when we visited an ostrich farm. Naturally, I wore my faux-ostrich-feather jacket by Stacy Lomman. I thought I blended in perfectly with the young ostriches.
Then a lady ostrich came over to inspect me …
… but I’m not sure she was very impressed.
I got so much use out of my feathery jacket on the trip. Most of the time, the temperature was in the 50-60 degree Fahrenheit range, and Stacy’s piece was perfect for that. As always, the jacket got an incredible amount of attention. Naturally, it was a huge hit with the ostrich-farm employees. But no matter where else I went during my travels — JFK airport in New York, Johannesburg, Cape Town — people stopped me to inquire about and often touch the jacket. My favorite encounter was at the airport in Hoedspruit. (We flew there from Johannesburg and then drove an hour to Thornybush.) Two Australian women couldn’t take their eyes off the jacket and asked all about it. They instructed me to tell Stacy that she is very talented. Then one of them said warmly, “Congratulations on owning such a beautiful thing.” That sentence really struck me. We so often look at anything fashion-related as frivolous and unnecessary. But what’s life without beauty, however we may attain it? It was Albert Einstein who said, “The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.”
Oh, and in case you’re wondering what beauty/fashion choices are appropriate for the pursuit of animals on safari, I recommend wedge sneakers and red lipstick.
