Pearls, Pearls, Pearls: June’s Birthstone Has a Moment

June 16, 2017 by WendyB

June’s birthstone is the pearl, and it’s having a fashion moment with the faux version turning up on denim and shoes.

Gorgeous jewelry blogger Monica Stephenson wore pearl-adorned jeans by Tu es mon TRÉSOR to a gold-industry conference in April. I was up on the stage participating in a panel about jewelry and story-telling and I couldn’t take my eyes off her legs!

Monica has legs for days!

You know it’s a big trend when the fast-fashion companies get in on it. Zara has pearl jeans for about $70.

Like jeans, casual shoes get glam when you add a pearl accent. Gorgeous jewelry expert Jennifer Heebner had pearls on her cool slip-on sneakers when I saw her recently.

Pearls on her toes.

I appreciated the way she combined the shoes with her real Tahitian pearl necklace …

I prefer this kind of pearl strand to a white one.

… and Tahitian pearl studs.

The real thing.

If you want pearly toes too, Bergdorf Goodman has you covered with Gucci pool slides …

… and Stuart Weitzman boots.

I also spotted pearl-adorned Weitzman mules in the Bergdorf Goodman catalog.

These looks bring back fond memories of Lupita Nyong’o’s faux-pearl Calvin Klein dress at the 2015 Oscars.

I’m most excited about this pearl though.

I love an irregularly shaped pearl. This one is going in a tiara, probably. #pearls #jewelrydesigner #jewelry #southseapearl

That’s a real South Sea pearl that will soon be set into the biggest and wildest jewelry design that I’ve worked on this year (so far!). You’ll see the finished piece next month. Stay tuned.

UPDATED TO ADD: The Financial Times published this interesting article on the history of pearls a couple of weeks ago.

I am a pearl fan, as you know! I even DIY’ed a pair of the pearl jeans myself – https://www.instagram.com/p/BSZKjxUB1fA/

Kirkwood has consistently used pearls in their shoes in cool ways but I love what Miu Miu had been doing with them – https://www.instagram.com/p/BPykwQAFhQI/

As a kid my mom told me pearls were bad luck. I have never really stopped believing it.
